Kong Tai is one of those suburban treasures, with everyone’s favourite Asian dishes on the menu. Various dining areas within the restaurant cater to large groups, as well as diners desiring a more intimate experience. The menu is extensive, covering food from across various regions in China, Korea and sushi from Japan.
In China, eating is a highly celebrated affair, and many hours are dedicated to long lunches, even for businessmen. Everything is repeated at dinner time, when many dishes are ordered for ‘the table’, creating a feeling of sharing, community and celebration. Starting with the myriad of lip-smacking dishes on the starter menu, we’re intrigued by unusual dishes such as the Jelly Fish, Spiced Knuckle and Seaweed with Garlic. Delicious dishes that are loved by Westerners are all there, including Wonton, Dumplings and Spring Rolls. For mains, seafood seems to dominate the menu, and we can’t possibly make any decisions when Sizzling Fish, Baked Prawns and Prawns in Black Bean Sauce are all calling us. Pork dishes range from Shanghai Style Fried Sliced Pork, to Deep-fried Pork Spare Ribs, while duck dishes beckon with titles like Beijing Duck and Roasted Duck.
Owner Betty confirms that her customer’s favourites are Chinese Crispy Beef, the Chilli Chicken and Sizzling Beef, but we’re swayed by the Sweet ‘n Sour Duck, Deep-fried Prawn with Sesame Seeds and the Fried Lamb with Cumin.
The sushi menu continues to enlighten us, with white fish, octopus and clam sashimim and truly unique California Rolls, such as the Salmon and Mango, and the Deep-fried Chicken and Mango roll. If you’re inspired to try your own hand at any of the dishes served at Kong Tai, you can simply pop next door and pick up any ingredients at the Chinese supermarket next door.
