The term Afro-Boer embraces so much of what this Rainbow Nation is about. It is about merging so many aspects of the traditional cultures with old-school Afrikaans tradition and the modern South African identity (which is fast moving towards going past colour and race). Afro-Boer, situated in Pretoria (Gauteng), is a funky café with a distinctive difference. Its menu, vibe and hospitality just smack of sheer South African-ness, while fresh ingredients and novel combinations are the order of the day for hungry patrons.

All dishes (including pastries and breads) are made and baked from scratch to ensure the absolute best flavours and textures. There are also a number of options for those following various eating plans (including low-carb, sugar-free options and items that are free of well-known allergens, such as eggs and lactose, for example). So, diners with restrictions need only discuss these with their waitrons to find the perfect dish for them.

The breakfast menu comprises a number of very innovative dishes. These include putu pap with biltong shavings, baked oats with whiskey and cream, omelettes (plain; with smoked trout, avocado and créme fraîche; or with chorizo, sundried tomatoes and cheese), eggs Benedict, or eggs with pap and boerewors.

Comforting meals are wonderfully satisfying and tasty ways to feast, African style. The menu includes “streetfood rump” (served with steamed corn bread), creamy chicken livers, beef brisket ragu with tagliatelle, Ouma’s fishcakes, and beef liver strips with mashed peas and sweet potato fritters. There is also a range of salads (including the popular duck breast salad with toasted walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette) and soups. Little ones will love the variety of meals and drinks designed just for them.

The bakery is just bursting with deliciousness, and those with a penchant for pastries and baked goodies should look out for the fresh scones with lemon curd and cream cheese, banana bread, shredded lamb sandwiches, fresh flatbread with pulled pork and mustard, French toast, or traditional mosbolletjies with bacon and golden syrup.

Afro-Boer is licensed and boasts a comprehensive wine list that includes cocktails, craft beers, South African wines, bubblies, and spirits.
