About Korentepoort Dam
The Western Cape Province of South Africa has so much to put on the figurative table in terms of tourist attractions. There are thousands of things to do and see, keeping young and old busy and entertained. But, in the heart of it all, there are a few tranquil gems that remain a bit of a secret, reserved only for locals or very curious travellers.
The Korentepoort Dam is one of the latter. It is not well known, and seldom visited by the masses that choose South African as their destination of choice. But, it remains absolutely beautiful; a treasure in the heart of the Western Cape. It is situated just 16 kilometres from Riversdale, which is a town on the N2 highway (the major motorway between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town).
This dam is the perfect place for those who love water and water-based sports. It is great for canoeing, kayaking, swimming, waterskiing and windsurfing. It is also home to a healthy population of bass, and is always a rewarding spot for bass fishermen to try their hand at catching a few. Spending a day (or a week) immersed in the beauty while indulging in lazy naps next to the water really is better than any medicine.
But, for those that want to explore the area a little more, there are a number of hiking and cycling trails. The mountain bike trail takes visitors through the Cape Pine plantation, where there are some stunning photo opportunities. Choose your pace, but come prepared with fresh drinking water, comfortable shoes and plenty of high-factor sunscreen.
The braai and picnic area (complete with braai facilities) are convenient and inviting, allowing you to make a whole day of your trip to Korentepoort Dam. The Mother City of Cape Town, as well as its international airport, are just under 300 kilometres away (or a 3.5 hour drive).
