Situated on Voortrekkers Street in the town named after Dr J Philip, the Transgariep Museum in Philippolis showcases three themes; Dr J Philip and the London Missionary Association, the Griqua era of Adam Kok and Emily Hobhouse who started a weaving school after the Anglo Boer war.
The museum is divided into rooms and shows the work of Dr Philip and the Missionary Association. On display is a book Dr Philip wrote in 1862. Other rooms focus on the life of Griqua Adam Kok. The bedroom, living room and kitchen are furnished as they would have been in the time of Adam Kok. A stable, complete with yellowwood beams and a horse mill which is still in good condition are also on display.
The remaining rooms pay homage to Emily Hobhouse and her spinning and weaving school which was started in Philippolis in 1905 as a way for the Boer woman to make a living. Various photos are on display showcasing her life. A distilling kettle (stookketel) is also on display. The museum still uses this distilling kettle to make their own spirits which are offered to museum visitors!
