Tepelkop hiking trail is moderately difficult and is suitable for children aged twelve and older. This ten kilometre hike near Bethlehem in the Eastern Free State begins at a converted sandstone barn which is used as a base camp for hikers.
Warm up with a good walk on the first stretch before you begin your short but steep climb to the saddle between the Witteberg and Tepelkop mountains. Along the way you will spot an outstanding array of flora and fauna.
From here you will be on rocky paths amongst the mountains where the views are breathtaking across the farmlands. Along ledges and over boulders, with rocky overhangs waiting to be explored, this hike is interesting and will challenge you at points.
Finally you reach a paradise towards the end of the trail, the beauty of the waterfall surrounded by ferns, mosses and overhanging plants is something from a fairytale. The final leg is a short one back to the barn. You can stay overnight at the barn and continue along an alternative route on the second day if you feel like an action packed weekend.
