Just an hour’s drive from the bustling epicentre of Johannesburg in Gauteng, on the lush banks of the Vaal River, is Pont de Val. This French-inspired restaurant celebrates classic style and taste within serene surrounds that invite diners to enjoy the delectable dishes that are so perfectly complemented by the scenery.
The menu is extensive, and ranges from light meals to hearty dinners, but always with the traditional French twist. The lunch menu includes salade halloumi, paté de Provence, croissant with fig or strawberry jam, croquet tartine Parisienne, and a range of very generous gourmet baguettes. Cheese platters are best shared between lovers or friends, and the decadent range of desserts beckons even the most disciplined of diners.
The dinner menu is available from Wednesday to Saturday. This is made up of irresistible entrées like blinis au saumon, brochettes d’escargot, and tartare de boeuf. Mains include orange-glazed duck breast, gruyere poulet, jarret d’agneau, filet mignon, and the hearty le cube burger. There is also a selection of salads, which can be enjoyed as a starter, shared by the table, or chosen as a lighter meal.
On Saturday evenings, the scene is set for the ultimate sunset, as an acoustic musician creates the back-track to one of nature’s most exquisite productions. On weekends, riverside wine tastings are a must for those that appreciate the delicious produce of local South African vineyards.
Pont de Val is about lazy dining; taking your time and savouring the fresh flavours and delicious ingredients of each creation. The dining area overlooks the tranquil river, which is best enjoyed when accompanied by one of the outstanding wines on the comprehensive wine list. During the winter months, the fireplace is blazing inside the restaurant, luring diners to relinquish themselves and relax.
