The Pickled Pig Ale House is a classic gastro-pub that has taken the beer-lovers of the little Free State town of Parys by storm. This is a cosy little pub that serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners to complement the impressive range of local and imported beers on offer.
There are usually about 75 different beers from which to choose. Most of these are imported, while there are eight local craft and imported beers on tap. There is even a slightly sweeter Busy Bee Honey Ale for those that are not keen beer-drinkers.
The Pickled Pig Ale House is ideal for a quick stop-over with friends, or a long afternoon spent sampling the beers and watching a match on the big screen. There is seating on the street for a great vibe during the day or evening, as well as an indoor seating area with an inviting fireplace. The beer garden out back is always abuzz with live music or, perhaps, an exciting game of cricket or rugby on the big screen.
The food is unique in many ways. Breakfasts include croissants with scrambled egg and a choice of bacon, Parma ham or smoked salmon. Of course, this is best enjoyed with the excellent hot coffee on offer. The lunch and dinner menu includes pickled fish, spicy calamari, pulled pork, dolmades, fresh bread, onion rings, oxtail pie, and tripe pie.
The Pickled Pig Ale House also has a comprehensive wine list, in which a number of excellent South African wines are featured.
There is a private room, which can be reserved for intimate occasions and special parties. The décor of this gastro-pub is an effective combination of industrial and modern elements with an inviting look and feel. There is free Wi-Fi here, and patrons can pay by cash, card or Snapscan.
