Just next to the bridge that crosses the mighty Vaal River is the inviting market called Hartelus Mark. Here, visitors and local regulars are invited to come back month after month to enjoy picnics on the banks of this beautiful river, the vistas of the Free State landscapes, and the friendly faces of the local people.
The Hartelus Mark is home to about 60 stalls, each of which has a unique offering and special appeal. Craft beers, cappuccinos and moreish coffees are best enjoyed with wraps, prego rolls, springrolls, kebabs, calamari, and lamb. For those with a sweet tooth, home-made biscuits, cupcakes, truffles, pancakes, baklava, and fudge are simply irresistible, and well worth a diet cheat.
In addition, there are also arts and crafts here. Visitors will, no doubt, enjoy wandering around the clothing, jewellery, and accessories stalls. Even succulents are available at Hartelus. This is a one-stop-shop for visitors looking for keepsakes and gifts.
The large open areas beckon the little ones to play, enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, far away from iPads and cellphones. There is also live musical entertainment, which creates the perfect vibe for a family outing or a day spent with friends.
There is a R10 entrance fee, which is used to pay the bands. However, children under the age of 16 years, as well as pensioners, enter for free.
