About First Raadsaal Museum

Dating back to 1849, the First Raadsaal is the oldest building left standing in Bloemfontein. It is an extension of the National Museum and functions to tell the fascinating story of the Free State and its establishment.

The First Raadsaal was a church until 1852, after which it was used by the Legislative Council of the Orange River Sovereignty and then as an Assembly Hall by the Republic of the Orange Free State. It was first established as a museum in 1877, and was proclaimed a National Monument in 1936. As such, it is full of history and culture. In 1975 the Museum was restored to reflect its intriguing historical role, and it was opened for public viewing in July of 1977. Today, it welcomes travellers from all over the world who want to immerse themselves in local history.
