About Timbila 4x4 Trails

The Timbila 4x4 Trails comprise three separate routes that are all contained within the prettiness and diversity of the Timbila Nature Reserve, between Steytlerville and Willowmore. These are small towns in the South African province of the Eastern Cape; specifically within the Kouga Region. They are hardly tourist hotspots, but exude a charm and loveliness that is not easily forgotten by those who visit.

The Timbila 4x4 Trails are focussed on game viewing and appreciating the natural abundance of this part of South Africa, as opposed to being about adrenalin and challenges. However, there are parts of the routes that enjoy a grading of up to three, promising drivers that they will have to test their skills and maintain concentration to a degree. The trails are about 40 kilometres long and, depending on how you choose to do them, can take anywhere between two and six hours to complete.

Consisting of game drives and farm roads, the terrain is characterised by riverbeds, rocks, boulders and impressive kloofs. They can be tackled without the aid of a qualified guide. Although the Timbila trails are open all year round, drivers should be warned that summer days are extremely hot, and winter nights can drop to freezing or below. Those visiting during these times should prepare accordingly. The views from various parts of the trails are nothing short of breath-taking and make for stunning photographs.

Drivers and passengers should keep their eyes open for some of the many animal species that call Timbila home. In addition, activities like game drives, guided nature walks, night drives and swimming in the Groot River are all on offer for guests that want to get the most out of their outdoor adventure. Star gazing is another must as the prime positioning of the Timbila 4x4 Trails – far away from city lights – means that the night sky is peppered with thousands of bright lights.
