Lying between Lady Grey and Barkly East are the foothills of the Witteberg Mountains of the Lammergeier Private Nature Reserve. A series of hikes through the reserve offer some of the most incredible scenery of mountain streams, sandstone formations and basalt cliffs. People describe it as reminiscent of the Drakensberg.
One of the most recommended hikes, scenically, is the Pelion valley walk. The farm Upper Pelion is a natural heritage farm, with grasslands filled with birds, wild flowers in spring and autumn, and a herbarium of wild flowers that involved Rhodes University in identifying the different flowers. Eight waterfalls up the valley are wonderful to explore.
Other hikes include Table Mountain Traverse Trail from Pelion House to Tempevale Valley that will take you roughly six hours. There is a steep ascent up the mountain.
Witteberg Skywalk is a pretty strenuous walk to the summit of the Witteberg. It starts at Olumpus Hut and heads up the slopes with wonderful views over the Kei River and Lesotho. It is a circular walk that will take you six to eight hours to do.
Black Eagle Trail takes one into the Karringmelkspruit Valley. Not only are there a series of little pools but there are wonderful views of Olumpus Gorge a little further along. This walk will take you roughly five hours and includes a few steep sections with four to five river crossings.
Be aware that in winter it can snow and get fairly cold, and that weather on the whole is unpredictable.
