Our tip: add an extra night to your itinerary to explore the Irma Booysen Nature Reserve in Cape St Francis
The coastline between the Tsitsikamma and the Kouga is inaccessible except by 4x4 vehicles over private land. Once the stamping ground of only a few fishermen and local farmers, it is now the backdrop to a new hike, the Huisklip Hike.
This area is known as the land of the Kershoutlaagte. The scenery is incredible, the rock formations breathtaking and the remote wilderness almost unthinkable, given that Cape St Francis, just a few kilometres away and the end point of the hike, is virtually inundated over holiday seasons.
Part of the hike passes through the 300 hectare coastal paradise of Huisklip Nature Reserve, where indigenous forest meets rocky crags and the river mouth of the Tsitsikamma.
Follow fishermen's footpaths, animal tracks and beaches through the land where humans first lived thousands of years ago – the Klasies River caves have revealed evidence of life 1.2 million years ago. The other name for this part of the coast is the Coastal Cradle of Mankind.
Day one: 10 km
From Cape St Francis transfer to the Tsitsikamma; walk up the Klasies River to a waterfall, see the Kouga's only Hole in the Wall and pass the Klasies caves. The first 10 km necessitate low tide in order to cross into the Huisklip Nature Reserve. Overnight in huts
Day two: 18 km
The longest day, follow the coastline taking in the incredible bird life, seasonal flowers, a ship wreck and seasonal whales. Overnight in a holiday house.
Day three: 10 km
Make sure to leave at low tide, and tackle the beach into Oyster Bay.
Day four: 7 km – 23 km
Explore the circular route to Thysfontein and then return by transfer to Oyster Bay. You now have a choice between adding the 16 km Oyster Bay Dune Bypass System or the 12 km trip from Mostertshoek to Cape St Francis.
Group sizes are limited to six people.
