Just off the Wildside in Noordhoek, Port Elizabeth you will come across Avalanche, a popular dive site featuring overhangs and profound crevices. This rough reef has a length of 150 to 200 meters and reaches depths between 17 and 28 meters.
The most bizarre fish here, favoured by local divers, is a Horse fish who they have named Horace. These fish are usually only found in deeper colder waters, but this little guy and a few of his friends have made a happy home at Avalanche. This spot is teeming with reef fish such as Red Romans, Bronze Breams and Jan Bruin.
A wide range of other interesting species along this reef include the Chocolate-chip Dorid, Orange Ghost Nudibranch, Mauve False Plum Anemone, Elegant Feather Star and a variety of different corals and sponges to name a few. Sharks have also been known to frequent the area, making this an extraordinary dive site with stacks to observe.
