Graaff Reinet

About Camdeboo Koedoeskloof 4x4 Trail

The Eastern Cape has a number of sterling attractions that certainly beg to be explored. Its landscapes are simultaneously rugged, beautiful and unusual; making it a particularly fun destination to explore by 4x4. There are ancient mountain ranges that were once the dwelling place of now-fossilised creatures and pre-civilisation tribes. There are extensive savannahs and bushvelds that are home to a wealth of faunal and floral species, as well as vast expanses of beautiful white beaches and dunes.

The Camdeboo Koedoeskloof 4x4 Trail is just outside the historical town of Graaff-Reinet, in the heart of the Eastern Cape. It is a seven kilometre return trail that takes about three hours to complete. Its official grading is between two and four. The terrain on this trail comprises rocky sections that become very muddy after the rains, and grasslands, with some steep inclines and descents on the rocky areas.

Being situated within the Camdeboo National Park means that it abounds with life, both faunal and floral, proving a delight for those that love the outdoors.

It is a self-drive trail, with no need for a guide. Summer months can become extremely hot and humid, with thunderstorms aplenty, adding to the challenge. The Camdeboo Koedoeskloof 4x4 Trail is open all year round, though.

Some of the breath-taking views that drivers and their passengers can anticipate include the Nqweba Dam and the Valley of Desolation (a National Monument that is some 100 million years old, according to scientists). The trail takes drivers to the top of the Winterhoek Mountain plateau. Along the way, look out for grey rhebok, Cape mountain zebra, blesbok, red hartebeest and springbok. At the turning point of the route, there is a picnic table and a perfect spot at which to enjoy the gorgeous surrounds and fresh air with friends or family.
