The Eastern Cape remains the quietest and least developed of all South African provinces. However, it offers visitors plenty in the way of things to do and see, which is often best done from the saddle of a mountain bike, affording fabulous sight-seeing at a comfortable pace. The Boschberg MTB Trails are on the outskirts of the small town of Somerset East, in the rural mountainlands of the province’s countryside.
These mountain trails were designed by the renowned Meurant Botha, and have been noted as some of the best in the world by avid cyclists. These routes wind through the breath-taking vistas of the Boschberg Mountain Range, on which indigenous forests abound and views of the magnificent landscapes are aplenty.
The single-track routes through Boschberg Nature Reserve extend for some 35 kilometres. Local, regular riders meet at the Boschberg Tourism Hub over weekends, testifying to the popularity of these trails for those of different cycling abilities. The Hub has bikes and helmets for hire, as well as maps and even guides for visitors.
Thanks to the close proximity of Somerset East, visitors to the cycling routes also have access to the little village’s coffee shops, accommodation, gardens and old-world streets and architecture. Fishing, abseiling, hiking and gorge-sliding are all local activities for those that want to get the most out of their Eastern Cape experience.
