About 32 kilometres outside of Tzaneen is the little farming community of Letsitele, which derives its name from the Letsitele River, meaning “valley of the dead” in Sotho. The meaning of this rather ominous sounding name no doubt originates in the devastating effects of malaria, which held much of the countryside here in its grip until the 1930s, when Dr Siegfried Annecke - a South African doctor born in Aliwal North who was awarded a study bursary to do research on malaria in Europe - managed to bring the effect of the disease under control in the area...
