Pretoria, Gauteng Some 50 km north of Johannesburg lies Pretoria, which resides within the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality - a cluster of metropolitan municipalities and councils that amalgamated in December 2002.  Known as the Jacaranda City for all the purple blossom-bedecked trees, which line its thoroughfares, Pretoria is a lovely, quiet city. It has a long, involved and fascinating history. Here you will find significant old buildings and fascinating museums. The Transvaal Museum has natural history displays and is the home of Mrs Ples, the australopithecine fossil found at Sterkfontein in the Cradle of Humankind. Union Buildings Pretoria: Designed by Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1913. Considered by many to be the architect's greatest achievement & South Africa's architectural masterpiece. This was the setting for President Nelson Mandela's historic inauguration in 1994. The spacious, terraced gardens command fine views of the city. See additional info about the Union Buildings. (Includes photograhs). Voortrekker Monument Pretoria: This large granite edifice which incorporates a museum commemorates the Great Trek. Pretoria Botanical Gardens The gardens contain indigenous plants from all over South Africa, including cycads and aloes, grouped according to their climatic region, all clearly marked. They are especially attractive in winter when many different species of aloe are in flower, and in spring when the daisies and mesembryanthemums bloom. Pretoria National Zoo This is one of the most famous zoos in the world and the largest in South Africa. The most interesting feature of the zoo is the aquarium and reptile park. Visitors can also take a ride in the famous cable cars which provide excellent views of the zoo and city. See the koala bear from Australia, which is not found anywhere in Africa. See additional info about the National Zoological Gardens. Wonderboom Nature Reserve The word Wonderboom is an Afrikaans word meaning 'The wonder tree'. It refers to a fig tree in the reserve which is believed to be 1000 years old. The reserve is situated in a remote part of the Pretoria city, Wonderboom.
