SOUTH AFRICAN TURTLE TOUR

Turtle Tour: As an urban resident who has an embarrassing affinity for nature shows, when we were deciding where to holiday this year, I pushed and pushed for South Africa until I got my way. Mostly I wanted to see the turtles - specifically The Loggerhead turtles. If I had gotten my full way, we would have gone for the full sixty day reproduction cycle of the loggerhead - from the laying of eggs on the beach to the hatching of the eggs to the watching of the baby turtles making their way back into the ocean.

We decided to spend the money and book a tour package with a well know Tour Operator. We had to add the turtle tour as an extra sort of side trip, but it was worth it. The turtles are endangered and as we are far from being experienced turtle trackers we didn’t want to mess with their ecosystem or damage anything that might be important to them. Or accidentally hurt one of the turtles.

With the Tour Company, everything was included in the price of the tour including our meals and we were taken through what I liked to call “turtle country” with an experienced guide. We left in the afternoon and our tour took until the wee hours of the morning. It was after midnight when we got back, but we got meals and everything included in the extra cost.

Overall, it was a really fabulous holiday. We got to see beautiful countryside, took a safari (where we saw white rhinos - another endangered species, so sad because they are really magnificent creatures) and got to meet the turtles! Some people would probably be more excited over seeing the bigger game - like the rhinos, but for me the best part of the tour was the turtles. In case you couldn’t tell that already. I’ve only talked about them for this whole entry!
