A BREAK AWAY FROM EVERYTHING

Sun City - A break away from everything - Recently my mother died of Kidney Cancer and was buried the following week. Some weeks before friends of ours, who had time share, booked a week at Sun City. The week was the one in which my mother was buried. Feeling guilty at first I found that the break away was exactly what I needed.

About two hours outside of Johannesburg, the trip was relatively short and painless. We found Sun City with ease considering the last time my partner and I had been there was almost 10 years ago.

The four of us stayed at the Vacation Club in one of the newer units. Consisting of two large rooms with on suite bathrooms if felt as luxurious as any hotel. In fact, on wondering around we found that our self service rooms had a better view than that of the expensive hotels.

Photographs:
Left: A regular visitor, this Blue Crane was spotted sunning itself on the patio of the rooms.
Right: The forest and bubbling brooks mingling with the Cabanas at Sun City.
My troop arrived at Sun City in two cars but with buses continuously running we didn’t need to drive around. Walking was another option and it gave us the chance to the see Baboons and Monkeys roaming the gardens. We also witnessed a Baboon attempting to get into one of the rooms at the Cabanas. Luckily people had adhered to the rules and had locked their windows and doors on going out.

I like the fact that Sun City recognizes that they are intruding on the wildlife and have gone to lengths to create a balance. But visitors still need to remember that these are wild animals and should keep their distance.

Walking through the gardens at the Cabanas and Cascades it was like walking into a magnificent forest. The aviary allowed us to get closer than normal to wild birds such as Barbets and Hornbills. I can’t begin to tell you how amazing that was. Little pathways extended through the forest of tall trees and little bubbling brooks.

Imagine living in a city of smog, noise and dirt only to travel a few hours away and find this paradise. I’ve lived in South Africa my entire life and still act like a tourist in my own country.

On our travels we also saw a Blue Crane sunning itself on a patio. Apparently the bird is a regular visitor.

The petting zoo hosted goats, rabbits and chickens as well as the endangered Squirrel Monkey in their own homes. Did you know that Squirrel Monkeys only give birth to one baby once a year? I didn’t know this until reading one of the information boards spread throughout Sun City.

There were various activities, some for free and others costing a certain fee like the Crocodile Sanctuary. We also went to the Entertainment area with a casino, kiddies fun area and a food court. The main casino was found in the next building for serious gamblers.

In our cosy bungalow we were able to braai outside while looking onto the mountain and the golf course close by. Everyday the workers came by to clear out the braai and clean up any litter left by visitors. We also enjoyed the heaters in our rooms making Sun City far warmer than Johannesburg was during a freak cold front.

On our last day I went outside to take one more look at the mountains and had a send off from the birds. Rain birds, Hornbills, Waxbills and other birds crowded under a tree outside our patio pecking away at bread crumbs.

The little break was enough to renew and refresh my mind. I was able to think clearly and relax. Nature always has a way of soothing the frayed nerves.

Sun City has so far been the best place that I have visited in years. I don’t get to travel much but should one of my relatives visit South Africa again I’ll recommend Sun City to them.
