It was our 1 year anniversary and the search for the perfect place was on! I had never been on a game drive before and always wanted to. My husband decided to look into Shamwari after hearing about all the awards it has received. When we visited their website, we knew that it was the ideal destination for us!

After booking our accommodation and mentioning that we are celebrating our 1 year anniversary, the woman giggled. She mentioned that Shamwari prides itself in spoiling guests especially when they are celebrating such a wonderful occasion. And so she prepared us for the pampering ahead!

The Eastern Cape consists of wide open fields of indigenous bush and tall mountains so the drive there was quite spectacular. Situated just 50km outside Port Elizabeth, Shamwari is the just the ultimate. There are no words to describe how phenomenal and luxurious Shamwari really is! It is truly an experience, one I will never forget. I have never been so pampered and treated before in my life! Shamwari boasts true elegance at its best, luxury and 5 star amenities as well as the Big 5. The food is absolutely gastronomical! With over 3 large cuisine meals a day as well as snacks and sundowners in between, you are never hungry or in need of anything. It boasts 6 different luxury lodges. We stayed at the Bayethe Tented Lodge.

When you arrive, you are welcomed with drinks and shown to your luxurious tented room. Your vehicle is parked for you and looked after. Each tented room is absolutely exclusive boasting large beds with luxurious white linen, bath robes and slippers, a continuously filled bar fridge, own private pool on the deck, Victorian bath and outside shower. All tents all situated around the river offering magnificent views. When it was warm, we could lift up the canvas ‘door’ in the bathroom area, and take a relaxing bath whilst listening to the harmonious sound of birds and rustling of trees. Because of the exclusivity of the deck pool at each tent, we could truly take a refreshing swim Adam and Eve style! One of the best things about Shamwari the way in which they pamper you and taking care of your every need and desire. If they are not serving pancakes at breakfast, but you have a serious craving, they will make them just for you! If you feel like snack in between meals, they will deliver delicious snacks at your tent.

We were very uncertain as to how they would specially spoil us. At dinner, we usually sat with our game driver and the others on the game drive. But when we arrieved for dinner the one evening, our waiter informed us that dinner would be served for us at a special and exclusive place. My husband and I were lead down to a deck overlooking the waterhole. The entire deck was lit up with candles, flowers, champagne and a prepared dinner table. We were served our 3 course cuisine meal exclusively. It was incredibly romantic and unforgettable. We thought our pampering was over until we arrived at our tent. Our bed was sprinkled with scented flowers and petals, a congratulations card and had our robes and slippers prepared. The Victorian bath was filled with warm water and plenty of bubbles and flower petals. The entire bathroom was lit up by candles and once again, the champagne and glasses were waiting. We never expected such a fabulous treat as this!

The game drives are phenomenal! If you wish, you are woken up early for a morning game drive. Snacks and coffee are provided before you leave to wake you up and additional coffee and biscuits are served on the drive. Whatever your request, your game driver will make certain he finds the animals you have always wanted to see including the shy leopards! When you arrive back, you are welcomed with a refreshing drink or warm Moccochino’s, a warm face cloth and led to the dining area for breakfast where the feast begins! After absolutely ‘pigging out’, we made our way back to our room where we could just sit back and relax. Trying to prepare for the sumptuous lunch feast soon to come, we took a short walk before we dived into the pool again. After lunch, you are invited for another spectacular game drive where sundowners and additional snacks are served. When returning, you are welcomed with champagne and led to dinner where the feast once again begins! The meals are absolutely delicious.

When at Shamwari, prepare for feasts, luxury and absolute pampering just the way you like it! I had never experienced such luxury and such a wonderful time than at Shamwari. We were so glad that we chose Shamwari to celebrate our 1 year anniversary.
