AN ESCAPE TO ROBERTSON

Submitted by: T. Adams, 27 April 2007

An Escape to Robertson, Western Cape, South Africa: We recently stayed on an organic guest farm, close to Robertson, in one of several beautiful little cottages that offer privacy, tranquility and skies I haven’t seen since I was a child.

Tierhoek and Spaarkloof farm is 1500 hectares set in the most idyllic valley. Turning off the R60 from Worcester at the Rooiberg winery and onto a sand road you can immediately sense the pace of life slowing to a leisurely amble. Even the 20km speed limit on the farm (so the dust doesn't affect the plum trees) seems too fast.

We had opted for Lucky Bean cottage, right next to Tierhoek House, the original farm house that can also be rented out, but never at the same time as the cottage, which means you have the added benefit of Tierhoek House’s stunning pool and can appreciate the awesome mountain views from its veranda.

Your immediate surrounds from Lucky Bean cottage include a thriving indigenous and water wise garden and a massive tree, that looks like a willow but isn’t, that houses a condominium of weavers’ nests. Birdlife here is rich and includes five pairs of Jackal Buzzards. The farm is home to klipspringer, reedbuck, duiker, baboons, caracal, Cape hare, tortoises and dassies. And farm animals are a delight for children and include chickens (and a monster-size rooster), geese, sheep and pigs.

The farm grows peaches, apricots, plums, prickly pears, shiraz and Pinotage grapes, satsumas, clementines, lemons, olives and mangos, all strictly organically certified by SGS, a Swiss organization, which means they sell to domestic and overseas market, including Woolies and Pick ‘n Pay.

I have to mention the starscape at night - it's breathtaking. There is absolutely zero light pollution so you get to see how the heavens are meant to look - a view impossible from the city. Be sure to spend some time on the patio stargazing if you visit.

Whilst we took the laid back option of simply vegging on the farm, there is so much to do in the Robertson area. We did get to visit the Rooiberg wine cellar and can recommend the Bodega de Vinho restaurant and bakery for their artisan breads. The feta and peppadew ciabatta was scrumptious.
