MY SOUTH AFRICAN PILGRIMAGE

I call it a pilgrimage because it was more than just a vacation at least that is what I was hoping to find. I wasn’t disappointed. I decided to do the Essence of Africa Soul Safari.

My Essense of Africa Soul Safari was led by Chris Stormer and Courtney Ward, two very spiritual women. Chris Stormer is an author and a natural healer who believes in the powers of reflexology and the Language of the Feet. Courtney Ward is an artist and a professional sound healer. She is also a dolphin swim facilitator.

After arriving in Johannesburg and then transferring to The Cottages, we took an afternoon trip to the Soweto Golden mile where we met locals from Mpani Street. The next day we went to the Tembe Elephant Reserve where we met the elephants. There were games, drumming and some other musical events over the next few days. The itinerary billed it was the “Introspective Game experience” and really, what better creature to help facilitate introspection than the elephant? They are such large and beautiful creatures.

We also spent some time at a health spa, indulging in some pampering. I don’t write about that as much because it wasn’t as spiritual for me as the time spent with the elephants. It sounds all new-age-artsy-fartsy but I truly felt that looking them in the eye, I was looking into their soul. I didn’t feel like I was in danger, I felt like I was communicating.

This trip did wonders for my soul. I returned home feeling more grounded and more in tune with the world around me. It was far more healing and relaxing than just lying on a beach and drinking two weeks away.
