THE SOUTH AFRICAN EXPERIENCE

Lion cubs at Pilanesbergabseiling-01.jpg (32861 bytes)South African Experience (Pilanesberg) - Two very excitable children and two very anxious parents board flight VS601 bound for Johannesburg. For the kids they were going were the lions live, for my husband he was going to be bitten by mosquito’s for 3 weeks and for me, well I was going ‘home’.

Upon our arrival we walked outside the airport building and I smelt that African air of which only if you have ever been to Africa will you know what I mean. The smell and the sunshine has something very special that welcomes you with open arms.

Monday morning we were woken up by the sound of the crickets and wood pigeons, a welcoming sound. The sun already beating down upon the patio and the kids wearing swimming costumes at 6am desperate to get into the water - our official first day of our holiday had began. We ventured to the Cradle of Humankind, boasting such magnificent sights as The Wonder Caves, Sterkfontein Caves and The Lion and Rhino Park - the very place where my babies got to play with babies belonging to a Lioness. It was just breathtaking - our son, then the size of a small springbok, was more than a tempting treat for the young cub to have a nibble on - how cute !

Later in our holiday we found ourselves in at Kwa Maritane which was just breathtaking. A lodge most worthy of a visit as it was truly magnificent. Kwa Maritane, a short distance from the magical Sun City and over the fence from the Pilansberg Game Reserve - what better view of South Africa than perched right in the middle of it (and malaria free kinda got my vote).

4pm in heat of the afternoon we board a safari bus, seating around 20 or so fellow holiday makers, we were off to find the Big 5 ! What a treat we had. We encountered mating Rhino, Lion heading for the local water hole, Impala, Springbok, from memory a giraffe was in the distance with family in tow and monkeys upon stone ridges galore!

The unforgettable part of our mini sundown safari was the Elephant bull that was not particularly happy to share any part of the Pilansberg with us and made us all very aware by his very ranting bellows and furiously flapping ears followed very intently with a light jog ... in our direction!

Our guide was just brilliant and was quite sure he had it all under control ... the zoom lens on my camera was no longer a requirement as I was almost eyeballing an elephant bull and wanting my mummy at the same time ! A truly exhilarating and memorable time was had by all and cannot wait to return and relive the South African Experience.
