Kragga Kamma Game Reserve
Review: Often we feel like just taking the day off and sighting magnificent
wildlife in their natural surroundings. Thankfully, living in PE gives us the opportunity
to do just that. The Kragga Kamma Game Reserve is situated right in Port Elizabeth taking
only 15 minutes to get there from the city centre.
The Kragga Kamma Game Reserve is home to vast herds of African game including White Rhino,
Buffalo, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra, Nyala, Bontebok, Lechwe and many more magnificent
species. All the animals roam freely, unrestricted in natural surroundings and lush
forests. We were able to take our own vehicle there and stop as we please when we sighted
animals. The great thing about this game reserve is that it has long stretches of wide
open land. So there is always something to see! We had the awesome experience of 2
rhinos grazing right next to our car! We spotted quite a few giraffes,
buffalo, warthogs (or aerials as my mom-in-law loves to call them) and many species of
buck up close and personal. When you enter the reserve, they provide you with a pamphlet
of the different animals to be seen, a picture of each and a block to tick them off if you
spot them. This became loads of fun especially as we began debating and took bets on which
species of buck each one was.
After an hour of driving we entered a lush forest area. It is enchanting and exciting when
trying to spot different species of wild life between the bushes. The warthogs are very
nervous and scared so they run into the bushes very quickly. However, we did get to spot a
mom with her young! These baby warthogs were just the cutest little things with little
tufts of hair and stubby tails. The forest area is quite dense with rivers and lush
vegetation. It took us an additional hour or so to complete the trail but was definitely
worth it.
We reached a gorgeous picnic spot where we feasted on munchies and had a quick snooze
under the shade of a tree. There is a lovely coffee shop situated right next to the fenced
cheetah area. As we enjoyed refreshing drinks on the deck we could spot the cheetahs
roaming their terrains. There is a forest walk that we decided to venture. We spotted a
number of mischievous monkeys and an abundance of beautiful birds. At Kragga Kamma Game
Reserve, we could drive in to the cheetah area and watch them up close and personal! They
roamed around our car but seemed very uninterested in out presence. Now, you can have your
photo taken with one of their tame cheetahs!
To end a perfect day off, there drove an additional 20 minutes and spotted a few more
magnificent animals before we arrived at the exit. Visiting the Kragga Kamma Game Reserve
was an ideal way of taking the day off! We have visited it 3 times and every occasion has
been just as memorable as the next. |
