Honeymoon in the
Cedarberg, Western Cape, South Africa: We had just flown out from the UK for a
rather hurried wedding - a number of Nathans family and friends came out for the
occasion which, despite much trepidation on my part that the two very distinct families
would get on at all, ended up being a huge success, if not rather exhausting. But it was a
glorious morning when we hit the N7 out of Cape Town, on our first day of honeymoon, free
of family and, for another week, free of responsibility other than to ourselves.
Theres something about the Cedarberg that hits me in the solar plexus and gives me a
warm feeling all over. The dry heat, the smell of oranges (alright, you cant always
literally smell them, but this is one of the largest citrus farming areas in South
Africa); images of the gnarled Clanwilliam cedar and mountain fynbos, yellow daisies and
wild olives in amongst fields of rooibos tea and buchu bring to mind this romantic image
that I hold of South Africa when Im away from home.
We were heading off to De Kom, painted as a tranquil African getaway on Petersfield farm,
an export citrus and rooibos tea mountain estate, overlooking the Cederberg Mountain range
with lush orchards and a fertile valley - the beauty of the place is what captured my
imagination. You need to understand what a contrast this is to the grey and wet of winter
in London!
Our hosts were charming and unobtrusive - we didnt know they were there until we
went to find them. They had laid out a spread for us - unbeknownst to me, Nathan had
phoned ahead to organise a few goodies so that, despite the fact that a B&B they are
not, they had got in coffee, bread, milk, cheese and flowers! The cottage had been built
and decorated beautifully - for want of a really good adjective! A gorgeous sunken plunge
pool just in front of the house has the most magnificent views. The first night we were
there the moon rose behind the mountains and took my breath away!
This gem of a farm hideaway is so quiet that you can hear yourself think, and there is
even a pair of Black Eagles that take to the sky periodically to our delight. We went on
walks, swam, read and lazed a lot and, by the end of our week there, can honestly say that
the healing tranquillity of the place restored our souls. This part of the
world is one of the most magnificent, and I will return as soon as we can! |
