SOUTH AFRICA TRAVEL

BACKPACKING IN THE CAPE

As a backpacker, the Cape Peninsula day tour was one of my favourite stops in South Africa: I got picked up at my lodge, or as I liked to call them (no matter which one I was at) my hovel away from my hovel and we went up the beach to Hout Bay harbour. Out the windows was a great view of the Twelve Apostles Mountains. When we got to Hout Bay they gave us the option of taking a boat trip out to the Cape Fur Seal colony on Duiker Island at an extra fee which I decided to take and it was definitely worth the little bit of extra money.

We saw the penguins in Simons Town (they are at Boulders Beach). The guide told us that if it weren’t for local protection, those penguins might not be there but because they were so protected, the penguin colony grew and now the site is a state park. The beach was overcrowded with the creatures so I wouldn’t recommend going there if you want a peaceful day watching the waves. If you are a penguin fan, however, it is a must see. Those birds are party animals! Literally!

After the penguins we went through the Cape Point Nature Reserve. We ate lunch at the reserve, right on the ocean (the water is freezing) and we walked to the South Western most point of Africa. The whole trip cost R430, which is about thirty one pounds and that includes the optional trip out to the Seal colony.

Another option for backpackers, if they are so inclined is the Baz Bus. The Baz Bus has routes through the entire country and is there to serve the backpacking community. You can buy a pass for as long as you are in the country and then take it where-ever you want to go. They have a “hop on, hop off” policy that makes travelling the country a lot easier than if you were left to your own devices when figuring out how to get to your next hostel or lodge. It’s also a great way to meet fellow travellers and trade stories (and find new places to explore).

I’m beginning to sound like a “Go to South Africa” travel ad! Really, though, it’s probably been my favorite place to explore so far.
