THINGS TO DO
Colesberg features an eclectic mix of buildings and architectural styles that take you back to a variety of eras.
• The house where President Kruger stayed while in discussions with Lord Lock
• The original Jewish Synagogue
• The Ortlepp House built in 1844 is the birth place of Lady Phillips
• The wrought iron lamp which stands at the corner of President Kruger and Ventershoek Street was erected to commemorate to Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee
The Colesberg-Kemper Museum
This is a fine example of 19th century Karoo architecture. It originally was the Colesberg Bank and later the Standard Bank. It is now houses fascinating relics of the town’s rich tapestry of history. This museum started in 1924 when GL Kemper donated his collection of artifacts to the municipality. It has grown into a valuable local cultural history museum. Among its exhibits is a collection of fossils dating back to the first reptiles which inhabited this area and a permanent photographic display, compiled by UNISA, on the Karoo Nomads. Walking tours of the town are a specialty of the Museum also organizes tours of farms in the district.
Visit a farm
Many of the country’s leading merino sheep and race horses studs are in the district. Colesberg is also well known for its game farms, game rides and hunting can be arranged for those who enjoy this type of sport.
Doornkloof Nature Reserve
The reserve lies on the banks of the Van Der Kloof Dam and features some of the country’s most spectacular hiking trails. The 10km stretch of the Seekoei River that also runs through the reserve is well-frequented by kudu, elands, brown hyena, a variety of buck, bat eared foxes, aardvark and around 173 species of birds, for the bird lovers.
The Gariep Dam and Orange River
These are only a stone’s throw away and offer every water sport imaginable. For the less adventurous, sedate hours of the 90m wall are just as exciting, albeit a less wet! |
