DESCRIPTION:
The Greathead Lodge is situated 28km north of Colesberg, on the Van Wyksfontein Farm. It is an elegant double storeyed house offering four en-suite rooms and one family suite.
The Greathead Lodge is an elegant double storeyed house situated on the farm Van Wyksfontein and is nestled against protective Karoo koppies. The house, built in 1870, is 28km north of Colesberg and 5km off the N1. A stream runs past the house. This fountain water is constant and feeds irrigable lands further down. Trees shade its course and a row of giant Cypress trees stand formerly in the front garden.
Large sash windows with shutters are a feature of this house as is the typically karoo moulding on the parapet. At the back of the house the top storey has a trellised verandah, and from it one looks beyond the attractive lawns, trees and flowerbeds to the koppie and pulpit rock which juts out at the top and is a vantage point for climbers. This is also home to a pair of Black Eagles.
Accommodation
The rooms of Van Wyksfontein house are large and beautifully proportioned. The atmosphere is different from usual karoo homesteads as the hall and stairwell are hung with large Game Trophies. In the dining room there are large photographs of the big game hunts and over the doorway hangs a large photo of the hunter himself. John Baldwin Greathead known as Dr J B who bought the farm in 1907.During the Anglo Boer war General Clements made this house his headquarters.
