“Twinkle, twinkle little star ... how I wonder what you are.”

Experience the brilliance of the Southern Hemisphere night sky as we introduce you to the heavens above. Join us in the ASTRO Boma (Open Air Observatory) where African star lore comes alive as you journey from the moon, to the planets in our neighbourhood and into deep space. Our guests’ astronomical safari completes an African Experience by including one of the most magnificent sights that nature has to offer. We have a large telescope on site and observation sessions take place daily, permitting the weather is conducive of good clear skies.

Malapo Country Lodge is a professionally operated concern. At this country getaway we take pride in providing quality South African country hospitality. Being owner managed, guests are assured of personal dedicated service and attention to detail.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation a Malapo Country Lodge consists of four well-appointed cottages, set in manicured gardens. All cottages are individually decorated and fitted with modern conveniences. A maximum of ten guests can be accommodated thus ensuring a haven of tranquillity.

DINING

In the evenings guests can enjoy an aperitif in our convivial pub followed by a 4-course table d’hôte dinner in our cosy dining room. Rainbow Trout is abundant in the “Highlands” and a table speciality. All meals are freshly prepared where meticulous attention is given to the quality and freshness of the produce. In winter burning a large wood fire in the pub keeps the cold at bay and enhances the atmosphere. A group of guests may request dinner to be served in the thatched lapa, weather permitting, creating the ambience for a true South African evening.

ACTIVITIES

At the lodge guests may relax at the swimming pool while savouring the peace and beauty of the gardens. The more energetic may fly-fish for Rainbow trout on two stillwaters or on the famous Lunsklip River. The flyfishing season is officially open from April to October.

The bird life is interesting with a variety of resident and migrant species. Short horse outrides offer a different perspective of the surrounding countryside. Children, we believe, will be kept occupied on the 9 hole mini golf course and play park.

Guests can walk at leisure on the property. Hiking trails are available nearby and cover approximately 43 km with a few beautiful small waterfalls. A field guide can be arranged to accompany hikers. There is an adventure centre nearby offering the following activities: rock climbing, abseiling and 4x4 trails.

The area in which the lodge is situated has a wealth of historical information. Explore the Anglo Boer War Battlefields where tales of pain, compassion, intrigue, cover-ups, humour, sadness and horror emerge. An experienced guide can accompany guests on half day or full day tours (booking essential).

LOCATION

The lodge is situated 35km from Lydenburg just 500m off the Bambi/Lydenburg (R36) tar road and is a comfortable 285km from the Johannesburg International Airport. Nestling in the tranquillity of the shadows of the Steenkampsberg Mountains that make this a truly idyllic setting where guests can relax in the serenity of the countryside.
