Paul, Marian and their son Damian are your hosts at this unique small family owned and run establishment, situated in the magnificent Schoemanskloof Valley. This venue is known for its excellent cuisine, relaxed homely atmosphere and personal service. Swimming pool, prolific birding and exhilarating walks. Experience harmony and tranquillity!

Accommodation:


Accommodation is offered in Rondavels and Kaia Rooms - each with its own character, theme and uniquely decorated style. Each unit also has its own balcony /verandah and bathroom en suite (bath and shower).

Rondavels (thatched huts)
These were the first units built at Old Joe’s Kaia. They are spacious with an organic feel from Africa, have recently being refurbished and sleep up to 3 people.

Kaia Rooms (“home” in Zulu)
Despite the fact that these units are semi-detached they are extremely cosy and private. Watch the birds from your own private balcony while sipping your early morning coffee or late afternoon sundowner, overlooking the garden towards the swimming pool. The Kaia roms have all recently been refurbished.

Restaurant:


Old Joe’s Kaia has always been well-known for its excellent cuisine and fabulous wines. Our meals are creative yet wholesome with a country flair. Trout from the area is a regular feature, as well as venison and ostrich.

Meals can be enjoyed inside the cosy lounge-dining area or outside on the balcony at tree-top level and overlooking the beautiful mountain and garden. Many interesting and rare birds such as the Narina Trogon, Purple-crested Loerie, Paradise Flycatcher and many more can be observed from here.

Advance bookings are essential for Dinner, while it is advisable to book for Breakfast and Lunch, especially for groups.

Swimming:
Spend time at our beautiful garden’s swimming pool, reading and relaxing to your heart’s content.

Walking / hiking / birding:
The Schoemanskloof Valley is an absolute paradise for nature lovers. Collect your pre-ordered backpack or picnic basket from reception early in the morning and set off to a cosy spot you have found somewhere in the Valley, or join an organised guided walk with an expert on the fauna and flora of the area.

Quad-biking - 20 minutes away:
Explore some interesting geography on wheels (by prior arrangement)

Horse riding - 30 minutes away:
Enjoy the uniqueness of the Kaapsehoop area on horseback. Walk to the edge of the escarpment and see the largest crater in the southern hemisphere.

National Botanical gardens:
A haven for birds and and over 650 species of indigenous trees. It boasts the world’s largest man-made rainforest where the 159 ha garden straddles the Crocodile and Nels Rivers. Enjoy your packed picnic from our kitchen on the vast lawns or cosy bench on the river front.

Sudwala caves:
Visit the oldest known caves in the world. Besides the awesome rock displays the caverns also boast an array of calcium formations, aged but active, anciently and patiently still growing - a must for every visitor to our area.

Panarama Route:
A day outing (Sabie is ¾ of an hour away) up to the God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck and the Potholes, Pilgrims Rest.

Old Joe's Kaia is situated between Machadodorp and Nelspruit on the N4 in the beautiful Schoemanskloof Valley, Mpumalanga, South Africa.

DIRECTIONS:

From OR Tambo International Airport
On departure from the main terminal, take the R21 out of the airport.
After approx 5km, take the N12 to Witbank. You will pass Boksburg, Benoni and Springs.
The N12 joins the N4 at Witbank. Continue on this road past Witbank and through the Middelburg toll gate (approximately half way to Old Joe’s Kaia).
Still on the N4, continue past Belfast and Machadodorp until you reach the Machado Toll Plaza.
Approx 1 km after this Toll Plaza, the N4 splits. Keep to the left and follow the sign that reads N4 via Schoemanskloof. / R36 Lydenburg. (Note that old maps show this road as the R539). Take the odometer reading in your car at this point.
Now continue on the N4 Schoemanskloof road for 40km (enjoy the scenery!). (Do not take the R36 Lydenburg turn off approx 16km from the N4 split.)
42km from the N4 split you will encounter the Old Joe’s Kaia road sign.
The lodge lies on the left hand side of the road.

From Nelspruit
Exit Nelspruit on the western side on the N4 to Johannesburg.
After approx 30 kms, just past the large bridge over the Crocodile River, the N4 splits into two. Follow the road that turns off to the right – N4 Schoemanskloof.
Follow this road for approximately 26kms. Old Joe’s Kaia is situated on the right hand side of the road.
