DESCRIPTION:
Ubizane Wildlife Reserve, situated in the heart of Zululand, the kingdom of the proud Zulu nation, is only a 2 hour drive from Durban on South Africa's eastern seaboard. The 1500 hectare Reserve, which is adjacent to the world renowned Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, boasts over 350 species of bird life as well as a variety of game including rhino, giraffe, wildebeest and many antelope species.
Ubizane Wildlife Reserve boasts a wide variety of game, including white rhino, giraffe, wildebeest, and most species of antelope. You can view the game from the comfort of equipped game viewing Land Rovers, on foot for a more thrilling encounter or on horseback for a wonderfully unique experience. Adjacent to Ubizane Wildlife Reserve is the renowned Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, the oldest Game Reserve in Africa where the Big-5 roam the bush. (The Big-5 are made up of lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard.)
Accommodation
Ubizane consists of two distinctly different lodges for you to choose from:
Zululand Tree Lodge:
Set in the cool, whispering tranquility of a fever tree forest, the Tree Lodge is a truly special retreat where you will be accommodated in luxurious stilted chalets and enjoy the most quiet lounges, observation decks and a sunny pool area where you might be visited by a family of warthog, a shy red duiker or a pair of purple-crested loeries. Each of our 24 luxury "Tree Lodges" include an en-suite bathroom, a kingsize double bed complete with insect nets, bar fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a private balcony with enchanting views into the fever tree forest.
General information on all rooms:
All Rooms are individual thatched houses raised above the forest floor on stilts; All rooms are fitted with double beds draped with mosquito nets and all have ceiling fans as wall as tea and coffee making facilities and a mini-bar fridge (stocked on request); The rooms do not accommodate a third bed.
Zululand Safari Lodge:
Families and conference groups will love the relaxed atmosphere of this traditional African self-catering reserve with its dining boma, swimming pool for those sweltering Zululand days, and comfortable thatched rondavels looking up at the sweep of Ubizane Mountain. Zululand Safari Lodge is the bigger of the two camps at Ubizane and offers comfortable accommodation with the option to self-cater. The lodge consists of 24 self-catering chalets - fully equipped kitchen, twin beds, shower, bath and toilet. All bedrooms are en-suite and all have ceiling fans.
Child Policy
Children are more than welcome at the Safari Lodge although children 16 years and under are not allowed on Game Walks. A special kiddies menu is available on request.
Cuisine
Meals at Zululand Tree Lodge are served in the Boma, an outdoor covered dining area that looks out over the fever tree forest and water hole. At night log fires are lit creating an enchanting romantic African bush atmosphere to your dining. The pan-African cuisine offers a variety of dishes in buffet style and the dinner buffet will usually include a venison dish amongst the choices of meat dishes.
The breakfast buffet includes traditional fare as well as an array of locally grown fresh fruits, yoghurts and health cereals. Lunch is an informal meal as most guests are out exploring the wonders of the area. For those who prefer to spend the day relaxing aside the swimming pool or with a book in our spacious lounge, a light lunch is available off the room service menu.
Game Viewing
The 1650 hectare Ubizane Wildlife Reserve is situated in the Hluhluwe region of Zululand in the Kingdom of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa and lies in close proximity to South Africa's oldest Game Reserve, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi. Daily excursions into Hluhluwe/Umfolozi offer guests the opportunity of viewing a wide assortment of African wildlife including the BIG-5 whilst more intimate safaris in game vehicles, on foot or on horseback are offered in the Ubizane Reserve itself.
Game on the Ubizane Wildlife Reserve includes rhino, giraffe, zebra, nyala, impala, wildebeest and over 350 species of birdlife have been identified on the reserve. But is also the smaller creatures and plant life that inhabit the land that make game viewing in Ubizane an experience to remember. The guides will intrigue you with the habits of different spiders, how the indigenous people use different plants and identify birds by their calls.
Game Drives
Game viewing in open game viewing vehicles is usually reserved for the early mornings and late afternoons when the animals become more active after sheltering in the shade of the bush during the heat of the day.
Foot Safaris
Those looking to get really close to nature can embark on foot with a trained game ranger to see the wonders of the African bush close up. The foot safaris are ideal for all and give guests the opportunity of truly experiencing the African bush.
Horseback Safaris
For novice and experienced horseman the horseback safaris add a whole new dimension to game viewing. The wildlife seem totally at ease with the horses and guests have an opportunity of getting close up to the game.
Conferences
Zululand Safari Lodge is ideal for conference groups. Delegates will love the relaxed atmospere of this traditional African self-catering bush camp, with its dining boma, swimming pool for those sweltering Zululand days and comfortable thatched rondavels looking up the sweep of Ubizane mountain. Full conference facilities are available for groups of up to 60. |

DIRECTIONS:
FROM JOHANNESBURG
Approximate distance - 560km. Proceed on the Witbank freeway (N4) towards Middleburg. At Middleburg take the N11 to Ermelo. At Ermelo take the R29 to Piet Retief, Pongola, (the R29 becomes the N2) to Mkuze and Hluhluwe. Take the Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay off-ramp. It is also signposted as Zululand Tree Lodge. At the top of the off-ramp turn right onto the R453 over the N2 flyover. Travel a further 2.5km and you will see the Ubizane Wildlife Reserve's entrance gate on your left.
FROM DURBAN
Approximate distance - 276km. Proceed on the N2 North, past Tongaat, Stanger, Empangeni, Mtubatuba and Bushlands to Hluhluwe. Take the Hluhluwe/Sodwana Bay off-ramp. It is also signposted Zululand Tree Lodge. At the top of the offramp turn left onto the R453. Travel a further 2.5km and you will see the Ubizane Wildlife Reseve's entrance on your left. Hluhluwe - 7km.
