DESCRIPTION:

Three Trees at Spioenkop is a family-owned-and-run small luxury lodge situated at the foot of the Drakensberg mountain range, and in the heart of the Natal Battlefields.

Accommodation


Three Trees at Spioenkop comprises 6 luxury en-suite rooms (all equipped with roof fans, heaters, down duvets and the finest percale linen), 1 two bed roomed family suite, a swimming pool, a main dining room, a spacious sitting room with a traditional wide veranda as well as game viewing deck.

The lodge overlooks a stunning valley of the Spioenkop Game Reserve, which is host to rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland and numerous other antelope species. A bird list of 300 species has been recorded in the area and viewing can be done from your private deck at each suite.

Activities


Walks and Horse Riding
Guests can take themselves off on walks (no dangerous game) or be accompanied by a guide if they would like something more informative. Guided horse rides to suit both novice and experienced riders are also available, the type and duration arranged on request. Both walks and rides offer breathtaking views of the Drakensberg Mountains and Spioenkop Game Reserve.

Mountain Biking
Three Trees offers a range of different mountain biking trails on the property, either with your own bikes or use of the bikes at the lodge. In close proximity are some more technical trails in the Drakensberg , which can be done with a guide on request.

Golf
There are a number of golf courses in the Drakensberg, all within an hour’s drive.

Hiking in the Drakensberg
The lodge offers great access to the Drakensberg for both guided and self-drive trips. Royal Natal National Park, Cathedral Peak and the Champagne Valley providing well-organised and exhilarating hikes and breathtaking views. Details available upon request.

Spioenkop Game Reserve
Guests can visit and self-drive drive to in the Spioenkop Game Reserve - about 40 minutes from the lodge

Battlefield Tours


Our flagship tours are the Battles of Spioenkop and Colenso together with Churchill’s Capture at Chieveley.

Spioenkop
Breakfast around 07h45 and the tour departs at 08h30 to this breathtaking hilltop battlefield where this most compelling story, in which Winston Churchill, Louis Botha and Mahatma Ghandi who all played a part, is told. The tour returns in time for lunch, approximately four hours later.

Colenso and Churchill's Capture
After lunch (at approx. 14h30), the tour departs for the site of Winston Churchill’s Capture, this incident and his subsequent escape propelled him onto the political stage in Britain. The tour then proceeds to the Battle of Colenso, where Gen. Sir Redvers Buller VC suffered his first defeat in his attempt to relieve Ladysmith. Seven Victoria Crosses were won in a courageous attempt to save the guns.

DIRECTIONS:

From Johannesburg (3 and a half hours)
Take the N3 out of Johannesburg towards Durban. Bypass Heidelberg, Villiers, Warden and Harrismith. Take the R616 glide-off to Bergville / Ladysmith (Exit No. 230). Turn right towards Bergville. Go for about 19km. Approximately 1km after the Easby Guest House sign, turn left onto the D564 ( Hambrook Village and Rangeworthy Cemetery ). Follow this gravel road for about 8km. The Lodge is at the end of this road – signposted left over the cattle grid.

From Durban (2 and a half hours)
Take the N3 out of Durban towards Johannesburg. Bypass Pietermaritzburg, Mooi River and Estcourt. Take the R616 glide-off to Bergville / Ladysmith (Exit No. 230). Turn left towards Bergville. Go for about 19km. Approximately 1km after the Easby Guest House sign, turn left onto the D564. Follow this gravel road for about 8km. The Lodge is at the end of this road.

From Fugitives’ Drift (2 and a half hours)
From Fugitives’ Drift proceed towards Rorke’s Drift, turning right at the T-Junction. Stay on this road (Rorke’s Drift will be on your right) for ±30kms. At the T-Junction (with the tarred road) turn right onto the R33 towards Dundee. Then proceed on to Ladysmith (R602 and N11). Continue on Lyell Street through Ladysmith, following the signs to Colenso and the N3. Do not go under the bridge to Bluebank, but glide off to the left, following the signs to Colenso and the N3. Approximately 2 and a half km from the bridge, turn right onto the N11 (R616), sign-posted Bergville.

Proceed for 31,5km on the R616 and turn left onto the D564 (+/- 1km after the Easby Guest House sign). Follow this gravel road for 8km. The Lodge is at the end of this road.
