DESCRIPTION:

Sewula is a small, intimate, secluded, luxury, fully serviced, self-catering lodge in a gorge making it one of the most unique sites in South Africa. Not only is the location in the Gorge with its dramatic natural features awesome, but around it is a thumbnail of the human history going back more than a millennium and much more. Humans have slept at Sewula for at least a thousand years.

Built with discreetly provided modern conveniences and fully serviced to make self catering (stocking up/shopping service provided) really easy. A Bald Ibis nesting colony, a rich variety of indigenous trees, pools and cliffs in the riverbed, various historical sites and a region (if you want to drive) offering the Drakensberg, the Midlands Meander, Battlefields as well as sporting opportunities. Free of malaria and bilharzia and there are fish, crabs and clawless otter in the river.

Accommodation

Sewula is particularly suited to small groups of family or friends or business colleagues who enjoy the informality of self catering with the benefit of helpful staff to wash up and generally assist. We also offer a shopping option whereby we send a draft shopping list, which you return, and we do the rest thereby making it easier for you to enjoy your stay.

Four en-suite cottages with sleeping lofts for children and young people provide beds for 8 adults and 10 children. Three of the cottages are twin-bedded with showers and one is a double with a bath and shower. The rooms are serviced daily.

There is a strikingly designed and comfortable Main Building consisting of a fully equipped modern kitchen, lounge with an open fireplace and dining room with a generous outside deck.

Activities

Staying at Sewula Gorge Camp actually means you don't have to do anything except absorb the peace of the amazing environment, sleep, read, socialise, loaf and recharge your batteries. The river in front of the camp is bilharzia free so sunbathing and swimming in the pools is easy. If you want to walk, Sewula offers much. There are clearly marked paths and guides. A Botanist's Dream, with its rich and diverse Flora.

The delightful shaded river walk can be extended so as to spend time at the Bald Ibis nesting site. A fine example of an iron-age (12th Century) 'fortified hill site' is immediately behind Sewula. Of interest is the Rensburg Koppie National Monument where in 1838 a small group of Voortrekkers escaped being killed by Zulu soldiers by fleeing to the stony hillock next to the iron-age hill.

There is a steep but gentle walk to an Anglo-Boer War defensive position with its dry-packed stone 'sangas' clearly visible. The surrounding area and tracks also offer pleasant and easy walks. If one wants to get into a motorcar then there is a treasure trove of activities nearb. Estcourt town has all sporting facilities, good supermarkets and other services.

The Drakensberg is an hour away and the Midlands Meander only half an hour. Battlefield sites on the Tugela line are an hour away. Picnicking and sunbathing on the river rocks after a leisurely swim in the river pools.
