DESCRIPTION:
Situated on a 300-acre private estate in the Bushlands area, 10km south of Hluhluwe, between the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, Mkuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and St. Lucia.
Malala Lodge offers the discerning visitor, true "Old World" hospitality set within the splendour of untamed Africa. This owner-managed lodge which nestles amongst tranquil sand forest, abundant Lala Palms, rolling grasslands and thriving wetlands, provides a perfect base for visitors to explore the vast and singular beauty of the Kingdom of the Zulu.
Malala Lodge is situated on a 300-acre private estate in the Bushlands area, 10km south of Hluhluwe, between the world renowned Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, Mkuze Game Reserve, Sodwana Bay and St. Lucia. Malala Lodge is in the centre of the birding hotspot of KwaZulu Natal, with over three hundred and fifty species of bird having been recorded in the area. We are also ideally located for interesting day trips to cultural villages.
The main lodge area overlooks indigenous forest where guests can relax around the cosy bar or sparkling swimming pool. Guests can also enjoy a leisurely stroll through the tranquil sand forest and grassland of Malala Lodge on well maintained and marked walking trails.
Accommodation
Malala Lodge can accommodate guests on a self catering basis or, if you would prefer, indulge yourself in genuine home-cooked meals either in the attractive thatched dining room or under the stars in an open-air "Boma". Accommodation Awards Semi-Finalist 2003. Accommodation is provided in various types of units, set in and on the verge of the sandforest, and comprises:
Chalets
Four private, thatched, open plan chalets all with en-suite shower facilities. The chalets can accommodate 2 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children sharing. All the chalets come with fully equipped kitchenettes, ceiling fans and barbecue facilities.
Bungalow
A self-catering bungalow equipped with en-suite shower facilities, lounge, kitchenette and ceiling fans and barbecue facilities. The bungalow accommodates two adults sharing.
Family Cottages
Two self-catering family cottages each comprising two bedrooms (en-suite), lounge and kitchenette and equipped with ceiling fans and barbecue facilities. These units can accommodate up to 4 adults sharing. All of the accommodation units at Malala Lodge are supplied with tea/coffee facilities and all linen and towels are provided.
Activities & Attractions
Game drives in our open game viewing vehicle to the well known Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve. This gives guests a superb opportunity of viewing Africa's "Big Five" and a multitude of other mammals, birds, reptiles and plants.
Day trips to the parks and beaches of St. Lucia, Sodwana Bay and Cape Vidal for boat cruises, kayaking, snorkelling, diving and whale watching. Walking and/or horse trails through nearby parks and reserves. Cultural Zulu Village tours - gain first hand knowledge of traditional Zulu culture and lifestyle. |

DIRECTIONS:
From Durban
From Durban take the N2 highway north past Stanger, Richards Bay, Empangeni, Mtubatuba and Charters Creek. Approximately 20 km after Charters Creek take the Bushlands off-ramp and turn right at the top, across the highway. After approximately 1,5 km (onto a dirt road) you will reach a junction where you will turn left. After approximately 1,2 km you will see the entrance to Malala on the left hand side. Approximate travelling time from Durban is 2.5 to 3 hours.
From Johannesburg
From Johannesburg take the N17 east past Bethal to Ermelo. At Ermelo take the N2 south past Piet Retief, Pongola, Mkuze and Hluhluwe. 10 km past the Hluhluwe off-ramp you will take the Bushlands off-ramp and turn left at the top. After approximately 1,5 km (onto a dirt road) you will reach a junction where you will turn left. After approximately 1,2 km you will see the entrance to Malala on the left hand side. Approximate travelling time from Johannesburg is 6 to 7 hours.
