This entire coastline including the surrounding big five game reserves is known as the Elephant Coast. iGwala is the Zulu word for the Turaco (Loerie) bird found in abundance in the tropical gardens of our establishment and the surrounding area. The whole area is a birders’ paradise. Just two and a half hours from Durban and six hours from Johannesburg, iGwalagwala Guest House offers one-on-one owner hospitality with a wealth of information on the area to assist you to make the most of your adventures exploring the Wetland Park and nearby estuary mouth of Lake St Lucia. AccommodationSet in beautiful park-like setting, with lots of indigenous plants surrounding it, iGwalagwala is a spacious, gracious guest house offering all the comforts of a home away from home. Our five comfortable, double rooms are tastefully decorated and are all en-suite. They are equipped with fans or air conditioning and tea and coffee making facilities. Two of the bedrooms have views of the inviting swimming pool. There is a television in the guest lounge for our guests’ entertainment. The large dining room is where you can enjoy leisurely meals and it leads out to the inviting patio, where hanging baskets and pot plants abound, attracting the local bird population. Meals can also be taken outdoors on the patio if required. There is a lapa adjoining the pool where guests can make use of the braai facilities. There is plenty of secure parking in the car park area and guests can have peace of mind knowing access to the property is via an automatic electronic gate. Breakfast and DinningEnjoy our hearty country style breakfast or alternatively opt for a continental-style buffet. Dinners are available on request and the large fully equipped kitchen gives guests the option of self-catering. Relax in our lounge or around the sparking pool in our tropical garden, sipping cocktails or enjoying our famous high teas. Attractions and ActivitiesHippo & Crocodile Boat Safaris on Lake St Lucia Hippo, Crocodile, Pelican, Flamingo, Fish Eagle & Goliath Heron can be seen on the lake. Boat trip cruises on Lake St. Lucia operate three to four times daily Sun-downer cruises are popular. Night Game Drives in St Lucia Wetland Park Leopard, African Elephant, Buffalo & Hippo are some of the highlights. The tour departs at 8:30pm & returns at approximately 11:30 pm. Whale Watching (seasonal) St. Lucia has the highest recorded boat-based whale sightings in South Africa. The tours are either early morning or later in the afternoon. Turtle Tours (seasonal) Witness this miracle of nature where the Leatherback & Loggerhead Turtles return to lay their eggs on the very same beach they were born. Zulu Cultural Village En-route to the Hluhluwe game reserve is the Dumazulu Cultural experience. The village has approximately 50 Zulu inhabitants who live on the premises and each guided tour has demonstrations of Zulu customs, from witchdoctors to homemade local beer being offered for taste. Cape Vidal This magnificent unspoiled beach lies 32 km’s from St Lucia village with easy access on tarred roads. See the world's highest vegetated sand dunes and walk through sand dune forests with a variety of bird life. Snorkel at Vidal in the warm Indian Ocean, sunbathe on clean beaches or try your hand at some surf or fly-fishing Big Five Game Reserves St Lucia is a 35 minutes drive to the adjoining world famous Hluhluwe/Umfolozi game reserve. Here you can expect to see the big five and especially rhino up close, as these reserves have the biggest population of rhino in the world. Birding More than two thirds of South Africa's entire bird population is found in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park making this an ideal spot for bird lovers. Canoeing & Kayaking - On Lake St Lucia with experienced guides to get you close to the animal and bird life. Horse Riding On the Eastern Shores of the St Lucia Wetland Park, led by experienced rider-guides who will assist inexperienced horse-riders. World Heritage Tour On the eastern shores of the St Lucia Wetland Park, which is situated between Lake St Lucia and the Indian Ocean. Deep Sea Fishing - either off the St Lucia coastline or chartered deep-sea trips from Cape Vidal. Costs include angling equipment & bait. |

DIRECTIONS: From Durban take the N2 North (appr 2.5 hours road travel) From Jhb take the N2 South (Appr. 6.5 hours road travel) Turn off at the R618 to Mtubatuba and follow the signs to St. Lucia (appr. 25 km`s) On arriving in St. Lucia cross the bridge over the estuary. At the T-Junction turn right into McKenzie Street - pass Engen garage on left - pass Spar Supermarket also on the left. When you see the thatched fruit market on your right, turn left into Dolfyn Street. Take the second street right into Pelican Street.
