DESCRIPTION:

Hluhluwe River Lodge is situated on the western boundary of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and is located on a promontory with sweeping views of False Bay and the Hluhluwe river floodplain.

Accommodation

The 12 thatched roofed chalets are separately located around the main lodge in the shade of an indigenous forest, where the beautiful forest dwelling antelopes the shy Red Duiker and Nyala are often seen browsing.

There are two luxuriously appointed honeymoon suites tucked away in a forested ravine just a short walk from the main lodge. These thatched chalets are made with natural materials on an open plan design with a large deck and slide away doors to take advantage of the beautiful forest surrounds.

With a King size bed and a suspended mosquito net the room exudes a romantic atmosphere in a natural setting. A Victorian bath is on one side of the main room with views into a tangle of giant trees and pristine forest. There is also a separate shower and toilet and a double basin vanity area.

There are eight standard chalets are built on stilts with thatch roofs and wooden decks. Each room is accessed via a wooden ramp leading onto a covered wooden deck appointed with comfortable chairs and a coffee table.

Double glass doors and a glass-fronted apex above the entrance facilitate a well-illuminated environment with views out into the forest. The chalets are spread about the forested garden environment and within the forest canopy affording a cool and relaxing atmosphere at all times.

There are two family chalets specially designed for a family with two small children. These open plan thatched chalets have a double bed arrangement for parents and a dormer set off to one side with two single children’s' beds. There is a draw able curtain to separate the children’s beds from the rest of the room. The chalet has a substantial luggage rack and storage area as well as a cupboard. The chalet is air-conditioned and equipped with mosquito nets during the summer months. There is a large deck off the front of each chalet with comfortable chairs and a coffee table and in the chalet is a tea and coffee tray with a supply of our delicious rusks.

Mkhulu's house is ideal for a family of four or two adult couples. The house is equipped for a self-catering holiday however meals may be booked at the lodge restaurant provided the lodge is occupied by guests. Mkhulu’s House is a 5 minute walk from the main lodge and we recommend that you bring a torch if you intend booking meals, as the path and road has no lighting. The lodge terrace has a fire pit which is lit every night and dinner is served most often on the outside deck or in the dining room depending on weather.

Dining & High Tea (Lunch)

High tea is available from 14h00 prior to afternoon activities departing. High tea is included in the Fully Inclusive rate.

Meals are hugely important to us. An early morning activity works up an appetite like nothing else. Breakfasts are a variety of fresh seasonal fruits, cereal and yoghurt with a choice of creative hot breakfast choices prepared by our local chefs.

Dinner of course is the most important part of celebrating another successful day and where better than in a candle lit outdoor setting. Our approach to food is to keep it simple and use the best ingredients available from our local suppliers.

Activities @ The Lodge

Mountain bike trails and guided sandforest hikes. Inclusive activity is not refundable for guests who choose not to partake in the activity or arrive after the activity has departed.

Activities and Attractions

The coastal and marine reserves of Sodwana Bay and Cape Vidal are just an hour’s drive from the lodge.

The lodge has a fleet of single speed mountain bikes ideal for exploring the areas within the lodge conservancy. We recommend a ride to False Bay Park which is a 2300 hectare reserve hugging the western shoreline of Lake St Lucia, and forms part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

The Hluhluwe River is a stone’s throw from the lodge and meanders between extensive reed beds and a vast floodplain. There is a riverine forest hugging the eastern side of the river and all of these unique environments give rise to a number of bird species frequenting the open water, trees and reed beds. This activity can be for those wanting to enjoy an evening drink along the river or an early morning mission for the serious birdwatcher searching for a rare sighting.
