DIRECTIONS:
From Durban International Airport
1. Upon leaving the airport you will cross a bridge over the freeway with a traffic light and advertising board at the far side.
2. At these lights turn right and after about 100m there will be another set of traffic lights under a multi-level interchange. Keep in the left lane.
3. The road continues straight to Durban and left to the North Coast and Pinetown. Take the left hand off-ramp which will say either Pinetown, North Coast or N2. You will then glide onto the N2 freeway.
4. Travel for approximately 8km and see a large cement factory / tower on your left. Carry on another 2km and you will go under a bridge some 40m above the freeway.
5. The next off-ramp will say Queensburgh / Edwin Swales. Ignore this and continue straight for approximately 5km and you will see an overhead sign that will say North Coast / Durban / N3 / Pinetown / Pietermaritzburg.
6. Keep in the left lane as you need to head towards Pinetown / Pietermaritzburg on what is known as the N3 freeway.
7. Thereafter you can follow the directions below (Directions from Durban).
From Durban
1. Take the western freeway, N3, out of Durban, heading west towards Pietermaritzburg.
2. Pass the huge Pavilion shopping centre on your left, and Westville. Keep in the centre or left lane.
Travel for approximately five kilometers and you will find yourself on a large bridge with a large white block of flats ahead to your left.
3. Just after the Paradise Valley Bridge the freeway will split, left to the M13 and Pinetown and straight ahead for the N3 toll road.
4. Take the M13, which is similar to a freeway offramp. Drive past the St Johns offramp.
5. Drive past Pinetown (you will see caravans and boats on your left and right).
6. Drive up Field's Hill (go past Jerome Drive, Exit 22 and Exit 23). At the top of the Hill you will go under a bridge and pass John Dory's Restaurant on your left, as well as the Delcairn Centre (Woolworths, Standard Bank, etc).
7. Drive through Kloof and you will see the Kloof County Club golf course on your left. Drive past the Old Main Road / Abrey Road off ramp (Exit 24).
8. Pass the Maytime Shopping Centre on your left and simultaneously drive under an overhead pedestrian bridge.
9. Take the next off ramp, exit 26, "Everton Road / Gillitts". At the top of the off ramp you will get to a set of traffic lights. Drive straight through and Hawks Rest is 1.7 km from these traffic lights. Do not turn left or right.
10. You will now be in Old Main Road, which runs parallel to the M13 freeway. Drive past Longwood Road and Blue Gum Road and you will come to a line of trees beside the road.
11. Continue on past a double storey shopping centre on your left which includes a Harley Davidson dealership.
12. Pass Hamilton Crescent on your right and Stockville Road and Gillitts Hardware on your left.
13. Pass the Fire Station and Police Station on your left. Pass Moyeni Road on your left.
14. You will pass a Caltex fuel station and then Clifton Road, also on your left.
15. Remain on Old Main Road. We are the second house on the left after Clifton Road (17 Old Main Road, Gillitts) with two hawks on the gate posts. These will normally be lit up at night.
16. Outside our gate is a white, reflective, 1000 Hills Experience sign as well as a brown "Hawks Rest B&B" sign.
17. Press the buzzer and drive up the driveway to the right of the house, to the back. Drive up the ramp onto the tennis court and park in such a way that other cars can park and get in and out without obstruction.
18. If you are a late arrival (ie. after 8.00pm) please do not buzz at the gate as it will wake up other guests. Please rather phone Brian and he will let you in.
From Pietermaritzburg
1. Having passed through Pietermaritzburg, Cato Ridge and Hammarsdale on the N3 you will ascend Key Ridge, a long steep hill that starts 4km after the Hammarsdale off-ramp.
2. At the top of key ridge the freeway splits into two, the right hand lanes remain the N3 and head towards Durban as a toll road.
3. The left hand lanes become exit 35, marked as M13A Hillcrest / Durban.
4. Take this Exit 35
5. Drive past the next exit, Exit 33, which says Shongweni / Assegai / Hillcrest West
6. Drive past the next exit, Exit 31, which says Hillcrest
7. You will wind up and down a hill and past a small dam on your left.
8. Take the next exit, Exit 28, which says Gillitts / Old Main Road / Hillcrest.
9. As you approach the top of the off-ramp you will come to a stop street.
10. At the stop street, turn right towards Winston Park, which is signposted.
11. You will cross over the freeway on a bridge and will come to a set of traffic lights.
12. Drive through the traffic lights and you will then have a BP fuel station on your left
13. At the next traffic lights / yield sign, you will see a brown and white signboard pointing left to Hawks Rest B&B. Turn left into an avenue of Elm trees. This is Old Main Road, Gillitts.
14. After going through a sharp right hand bend you will be travelling parallel to the M13 freeway, in Old Main Road.
15. We are situated at number 17 on the right hand side (a light-brown double-storey building), about 500 m from the sharp bend, with two hawks on the gate posts, and three white garages that can be seen from the gate. The hawks will normally be lit up at night.
16. Outside our gate is a white 1000 Hills Experience sign, as well as a brown "Hawks Rest B&B" sign.
17. If you pass a Caltex garage you have gone too far.
18. Press the buzzer and drive up the driveway to the right of the house, to the back. Drive up the ramp onto the tennis court and park in such a way that other cars can park and get in and out without obstruction.
19. If you are a late arrival (ie. after 8.00pm) please do not buzz at the gate as it will wake up other guests. Please rather phone Brian and he will let you in.
