DESCRIPTION:

Barnacle Bill’s Beach Cottage, an original fishermen’s cottage, situated on the edge of the Admiralty Reserve, and about 25 paces to the beach sand, is the ideal family holiday home. There are loads of shops, restaurants and fun activities close by. The area is quiet and peaceful, and ideal for unwinding from the stresses of city life.

Experience the difference that is Barnacle Bill’s Beach Cottage. With a warm personal greeting, welcome refreshments set out on the patio table, a complementary basket of treats, homemade fudge and toiletry packs on the beds, we bid you a special South Coast welcome.

The quiet, unspoilt beach in front of the property is ideal for fishing, diving, walking and kite flying, while the bathing and surfing beaches are a few minutes’ walk along the beach at Umtentweni.

For nature lovers, you can spot more than 70 species of birds, as well as a family of endangered blue duiker who inhabit the bush along the beach, and also a family of Cape clawless otter, whose tracks you can see on the beach near the dunes in the mornings. Look out too for the shy genet.

For those days that you don’t feel like being on the beach, you can just laze by the pool, or relax on the patio. For those rainy days you have a. TV, CD and DVD player as well as books, magazines and games.

DIRECTIONS:

Take the Ring Road around Durban, (N2) following the signs for Port Shepstone. Drive for about 100 kilometres from Durban, till you reach the Hibberdene turnoff (Exit 72).  (At this point, please phone me, so that I can meet you at the cottage.)

You can either take this exit, which takes you on the coast road (R102), or continue on the toll road.

If you take the toll road, take the exit at the first tollbooth, which is the Umtentweni / Port Shepstone North Exit. At the stop street at the top of the exit turn left, (heading towards the sea), and continue on this road about two kilometres, till you reach the traffic lights, where you turn left again, (heading back towards Durban). Cross the Umtentweni River bridge (Caltex service station on the left), after about 150 metres take the second turn to the right (Third Avenue), just at the Homemakers' Hardware store. Cross the railway line, the road turns to the right and becomes Beachfront Road.  Ours is the third house along.

If you take the coast road, from the Hibberdene turnoff you drive about 18 kilometres, through a number of little villages, you will come to a set of traffic lights, and on your left hand side you will see a thatched farm stall, called Sayidi.  Go through the traffic lights, and the next turn to your left will be Third Avenue, when you will follow the directions as above.
