The coal mining hub of Witbank is a significant part of South African history, and is situated in Mpumalanga’s Highveld. It is frequented by travellers that are en route to the Kruger National Park. However, it is also a popular spot in which to stop for those wanting to test their swing at the Witbank Golf Club, which is always open to both visitors and members alike.
The Witbank Golf Club was built as a nine-hole course by a local coal mining company. The greens were sand, and the clubhouse (added on in 1928) was stone and thatch. However, it has since been rebuilt and renovated, and now comprises a full 18 holes, a revamped clubhouse, and conference facilities that double as an event venue for up to 120 guests.
There are plenty of trees on and around the golf course, making for pretty surrounds and assuring golfers of many bird species with which to share their day on the fairways. There are a number of water hazards along the course, one of which is on the signature hole, hole eight.
There is a pro shop at Witbank Golf Club, a pro coach that is on hand to assist players as well as a driving range, making it ultimately convenient for golfers of any playing level. Carts are available to hire, when necessary. The halfway house is a popular spot in which to relax and refresh with friends. The clubhouse patio is spacious, and boasts gorgeous views of three different holes (9, 10 and 18) and the fairways that tumble over the countryside in lazy elegance.
