Western Cape Game and Nature ReservesThe Flower Valley Farm

Flower Valley Farm is a fynbos sanctuary in the heart of the Overstrand mountains, close to the seaside town of Gansbaai.

Run by the Flower Valley Conservation Trust, the farm conserves endangered lowland fynbos by ensuring sustainable fynbos picking, whilst at the same time empowering vulnerable communities for whom fynbos harvesting provides a livelihood.

Flower Valley Farm partners with Fynsa, based in the nearby town of Stanford. They provide a group of local people to pick fynbos at Flower Valley. The group of mostly women arrange the fynbos into bouquets for both local and overseas retailers, like Pick n Pay, and Marks and Spencer.

Lowland fynbos is found only in a small belt around the southern tip of Africa. Much of the fynbos species in the Cape has already been lost, and a large majority of it is endangered. Flower Valley Farm actively promotes sustainable fynbos harvesting in a bid to prevent further loss of this floral kingdom.

For responsible and ethical consumers the Flower Valley logo on a bunch of fynbos means that the fynbos was not overpicked, nor was the veld damaged in the process. At the same time, locals involved in the project are fairly treated and receive continuous training. Flower Valley, like other farms that supply to Fynsa, is independentally and regularly audited as part of the process.

The farm also has an Early Learning Centre to teach youngster between the ages of two and six, most of them from the local vulnerable communities. The children receive a good meal, safety and education with an environmental theme.

Flower Valley Farm is a botanist's and birder's eutopia. A visit will give you access to unguided hikes on designated paths through the mountains.
