Rustenburg Nature Reserve: The Rustenburg Nature Reserve lies at the western end of the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment, about 100 km from Pretoria and Johannesburg. Originally established on the farm Rietvallei which once belonged to President Paul Kruger, it has been gradually expanded over the years and now covers some 4500 ha. The Rustenburg Nature Reserve is dominated by the rocky ridges of the Magaliesberg, with well-wooded ravines on the rugged slopes. A large valley basin and an extensive plateau form an important water catchment area from which the main watercourse flows into a large, reed-filled marsh.

Although broadly defined as sour bushveld, the Rustenburg reserve's vegetation is varied, comprising grassland, scrub, mixed woodland, and even scattered pockets of fynbos. More than 115 tree and bush species are known to grow in this mountain reserve as well as a number of rare plants.

Wildlife at Rustenburg Nature Reserve includes Oribi, common duiker, klipspringer, reedbuck, mountain reedbuck, kudu, red hartebeest and sable are among the 13 antelope species that roam the reserve. The smallest of these, and other small mammals, are preyed upon by leopard, caracal, brown hyena and black-backed jackal, but these predators are seldom seen. Some 230 bird species have been observed here, and a Cape griffon breeding colony is situated just to the east of the reserve. Both martial and black eagles occur
