Garden Route Game and Nature ReservesThe Pledge Nature Reserve

This 10 hectare local nature reserve functions as something of a green lung in Knysna, lying as it does just behind Main Road.

Made up of forest, wetland and fynbos, Pledge Nature Reserve it is not only beautiful filled with indigenous plants, cool ponds and streams and a wonderful bird life - but it also provides a series of paths and hidden benches that make it a peaceful retreat.

Described by visitors as a 'pocket of paradise', there is one trail in particular that leads to the lookout point that is worth taking, if your time is limited. Well behaved dogs are allowed on leads.

Pledge Nature Reserve's history is interesting. Hard to believe that it used to be a brickfield and was known as Bok-se-Kloof situated on the edge of town. This closed around 1920 and, aside from being used by a Brownie group to learn about the area's botanical beauty, it was abandoned more or less.

Flash floods silted up the streams and it began to be used as a dumping ground for builders' rubble and refuse. Finally a group of people 'rescued' it by clearing invader species and declaring it a reserve. It is registered as a non-profit community project and functions on grants and donations (donors can adopt a forest tree).

Tip: the Pledge reserve is fairly unknown and not visited by many. As a result it is something of a sanctuary for those who go there, and peace and tranquillity predominate. Over 90 species of bird have been spotted, as well as grysbok, mongoose, porcupine and genet.

Mervyn Crous, the curator, apparently hosts evening walks through the reserve that are said to be fascinating. Take a picnic!
