Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Durban
Welcome to Durban, city of many faceted cultures, exquisite beaches and seaside weather. We meet you off your flight into King Shaka International Airport. You are transferred to your comfortable hotel, set on the revitalized beachfront stretch of the Marine Parade. We’ve organized an orientation City Tour leaving at 14h00, and then, for a panoramic bird’s-eye view of the City and surrounds, you’ll take your seat on our Moses Mabhida football Stadium Sky Car…and our world will be your oyster! As the sun sets, you’ll have the remainder of the day to enjoy the beachfront promenade, and the constant stream of action which parades along this seaside strip.

Day 2: Durban to Drakensberg
We leave Durban by 06h30 this morning, heading towards the village of Underberg at the foot of the southern Drakensberg Mountains. Here we transfer to 4x4 vehicles, tough enough to climb the highest vehicle pass in Southern Africa. The views from Sani Pass are utterly spectacular and can’t help but make a lasting impression on first-timers. At the top is the border post between South Africa and Lesotho – passports are a must. Once inside Lesotho, we visit a Sotho tribal village, and interact
with the local people before enjoying lunch at the highest pub in Africa. Perched right near the edge of the mountain, it has few rivals in terms of pub views. Fortified, we wind our way gently back down the mountain, and with all that fresh air, we’ll be looking forward to putting up our feet and settling into our accommodation.

Day 3: Drakensberg
This morning, we amble through the glorious southern Berg to Royal Natal National Park and we do so through the lush, green Midlands Meander area. Here, numbers of city folk have chosen to swop stress for the slow lane, and work with arts and crafts; this country area is filled with quality enterprises - a number of them recognised internationally – and we’ll be stopping for a little shopping. Our overnight accommodation is set in this magnificent Park, and we’ve given you the afternoon at leisure to explore those aspects which most interest you. Royal Natal National Park is renowned for its spectacular scenery and wonderful mountain trails which reach into the heart of this KwaZulu-Natal nature reserve. For walkers and hikers, there are short excursions; for those content to absorb the beauty of the Drakensberg, there’s the Amphitheatre, a 5 kilometre long, 500 metre high rock wall, and above the rock face, Mont-Aux-Sources peak where the Orange River journeys west across South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean. The Thukela (Tugela) River – boasting one of the highest waterfalls in the world – cascades down the rock face as it heads east to the Indian Ocean. In a nutshell, the scenery is breathtaking. Do your camera a favour and set it on automatic.

Overnight: Mont-Aux-Sources Hotel or similar

Day 4: Drakensberg
After breakfast, we set off on a leisurely roundtrip hike to age-old bushman paintings (average level of fitness required), at a site which was once home to South Africa’s earliest inhabitants, the San people, better known as Bushman. Enjoy a fascinating tour of the rock paintings, which remain on the cave walls as clues to the San’s simple lifestyle. Now you can choose – we all return to our accommodation at Mont-Aux-Sources Hotel and you can either have a leisurely afternoon soaking in the beauty; or strap on those hiking boots, and take to the mountains again for an afternoon hike.
Distance travelled today: 40 kms

Overnight: Mont-Aux-Sources Hotel or similar

Day 5: Drakensberg to Johannesburg or Pretoria
We tuck into a wonderful mountain breakfast, and we’re all set for our road trip back to Johannesburg. Sit back and enjoy the scenery. We’ll be there mid-afternoon.
