The Anglo-Zulu War (1879) battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift are famous for the epic stories of human drama, atmosphere and historical significance. Our two day tour follows the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal stopping at the historic Ultimatum Tree on the banks of the Thukela River where we set the scene for the battlefields tour. We continue inland to Fort Nonqgai at Eshowe for lunch, taking time out to experience this unique fort and the amazing Zulu basket museum. After lunch we enjoy a scenic drive through rural Zululand to Babanango Valley Lodge, a magical and special place, which is our overnight accommodation. Depart after breakfast the next morning for the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and relive the drama of the clash of Empire and Kingdom. Lunch at Isandlwana Lodge with its panoramic view over the lonely battlefield. Depart for home via Tugela Ferry and Greytown arriving in the evening.

Day 1: Pietermaritzburg to Babanango Valley Lodge
Depart early from pick up point / place of residence for Ultimatum Tree on the banks of the Thukela River on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Enjoy a picnic brunch.
Travel inland to Eshowe and Fort Nonqgai where we break for lunch after a tour of the Fort and Basket Museum. Depart for Babanango Valley Lodge, driving through the sacred heart of Zulu history: the Emakhosini Valley (Valley of the Kings).
In the evening enjoy the magnificent beauty of the Babanango Valley and a delicious dinner at this highly regarded Lodge.

Day 2: Babanango Valley Lodge to Pietermarizburg
Enjoy a full breakfast and depart for Isandlwana, following the line of Zulu advance prior to the battle on that fateful day in January 1879. Be enthralled as we experience the eerie solitude of the battlefield, little changed since 1879, as we listen to the unfolding events of that tragic day.
In the afternoon we drive a short distance to the magnificent Isandlwana Lodge hugging the cliff face overlooking the battlefield. Enjoy a welcome lunch and refreshments. After lunch, drive to Rorke’s Drift, the site of the remarkable battle on the same day. Marvel at the accounts of British and Zulu heroism and valour where 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded.
Drive back to Pietermaritzburg via Tugela Ferry and Greytown.
