Tour Description
It's been called "The Volcano that gave birth to a game reserve". This park is situated on the eroded remains of a volcanic crater, said to be one of only three alkaline volcanos in the world. It is believed the eruptions took place some 1,300 million years ago, leaving behind a unique geological structure with footprints of rare rock types.
The park also provides a wide diversity of eco-types, giving a beautiful home to more than 35 species of large mammals, especially the sought after 'Big 5'. It has the major advantage of being within a malaria-free belt.
Possibly one of the most interesting aspects of this reserve is that it brings together the mammals from the dry areas - those that do not need water on a daily basis alongside those that need water regularly. You will find from the desert antelope such as springbok, orynx, tsebebe and hartebeest, running alongside impala, kudu, nyala and bush buck.
