The Marimba Festival is set to continue this exciting trend. Living up to its reputation of being a truly South African gathering, the Festival will welcome participants from Gauteng, Cape Town, Grahamstown, East London, Port Elizabeth, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Swaziland, the North West and Mafikeng. Events include a Marimba Competition, Massed Marimba items, Drumming workshops, Dance Workshops and Interactive Drumming. Accommodating close to 100 marimbas, representing 30 different schools and institutions from around the country.
The eclectic and exciting mix of music experienced at the Festival gives a clear indication not only of South Africa's musical miscellany but of the versatility and adaptability of the marimba as a musical medium. Over the three years everything from classical music, to light pop and folk music has made it into the competition. And, of course, hearing young musicians playing traditional South African music has become a thrilling feature of the Festival.
