ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES
Port St. Johns is situated halfway between East London and Durban, on the Wild Coast (Transkei). The coast of the old Transkei (now part of the Eastern Cape Province) is known as the Wild Coast. Exploring the Wild Coast is a delight for the nomad. There are lagoons, cliffs, palm trees, arum lilies, sandy bays and rivers reaching the sea in deep valleys, many of them finding their way through the hills in incredibly involved convolutions. The road to any coastal point leads through unforgettable scenery, offering innumerable interesting glimpses of the way of life of a people living in a manner totally different from that of Europe or Asia.
Few people visit Port St. Johns without being captivated. It is an easy-going place where formal dress is unknown. There is little doubt that together with its surroundings, it is a Paradise, be it for the artist, photographer, naturalist, botanist, or for those just seeking pease and relaxation. It is a lovable, unspoilt destination, with no pretence of being anything else.
There are three superb beaches, several rocky headlands, boating up the river and many paths leading through the forest to scenic spots. The climate is perfect for holidays all year round, with sea temperatures high enough for even mid-winter bathing. Fruit like banana, paw-paw, mango, litchi & avocado, which are grown in the river valley, are sold at roadside stalls. Craft such as beadwork, baskets and walking sticks, made by locals are also available to purchase.
