The old Roman Catholic Church is now our culinary center. Here we serve wholesome country cooking. Meals are available at an hour’s notice 7 days a week. You can even have fresh trout - when available. Many people have remarked about the selection of over 40 whisky’s (26 Malt whisky’s) in Nigel’s pub - inside the church. The bar caters for patrons of the guesthouse or private functions only, and is not open to the public.
Fishing
Regarding activities, we specialize in fly-fishing. We have an in-house REFFIS (Register of fly fishing instructors and guides) accredited guide, one of only three Theta accredited fly fishing guides in the Eastern Cape.
Our strapline is “wild fly fishing in the Karoo” and it really is something special that must be experienced. There are 7 freshwater species that can be targeted on fly – trout (brown and rainbow), black bass, smallmouth yellowfish, moggel, mudfish, barbell & tilapia. We have access to private waters, where the only people permitted to fish are the guests of the Angler and Antelope. The Bankberg Troutfishers Club waters are also available to day visitors.
Attractions & Activities
Other activities on offer in the area are Big 5 game viewing, horse riding safaris, horse riding, quad biking, abseiling, gorge gliding, hiking & bird watching. In the town, there is also the Somerset East museum, in the old Wesleyan chapel dating back to before 1825, as well as the Walter Battiss art gallery and many other historical building dating back to the early 1800’s.
