As the Beck Huis was the home of my great great grandparents I wanted to visit it in March 2015 when we were in South Africa. I discovered that the Beck Huis had been sold to a private buyer who was renovating it in order to live in it, by the Town Council. The contents of the museum had been moved to the Klein Plaasie Museum in Worcester - an open air farm museum. I was able to view the furniture which was located in an overcrowded store room. I really wanted to see a painting of my great grandmother which had been donated to the Beck Huis Museum by my cousin Henri Meiring. I was told I would have to give about 3 weeks notice of my visit to allow the staff to find the painting and to unwrap it for me to see it.
I was very disappointed by the events surrounding the sale of the museum. I hope that the better paintings will be moved to another Museum such as the National Portrait Gallery in the Gardens, Cape Town where the paintings will be properly cared for and available for the public to view.
