A tasting of Tribaut Champagne at Granny Mouse Country House

A tasting of Tribaut Champagne with Leanne Roberts, 28th May 2008

Champagne is the name of a region in the North of France. With a winemaking history of over 300 years and an annual production of 300.000.000 bottles, it is the world's largest producer and exporter of Methode Traditionnelle, also called there "Methode Champenoise".

Please join us on the 28th May 2008 at Granny Mouse Country House (Balgowan, Natal Midlands) for a gourmet wine evening hosted by French Champagne Estate Tribaut Schloesser. The evening will be presented by Jean-Phillipe Colmant, owner and winemaker of Colmant Cap Classique and Champagne. The evening will kick off with the traditional Sabrage of a bottle of Champagne performed by Jean-Philippe at the swimming pool with canapés and Tribaut Champagne as welcome drinks. Leanne Roberts, executive chef of Granny Mouse will prepare a 5 course set menu where each dish will be paired with a glass of Tribaut Champagne.

The cost will be R600.00 per person which will include Champagne for welcome drinks, canapés and a 5 course gourmet menu and all Champagnes to be paired with each dish.

South African Turtle Tours

"As an urban resident who has an embarrassing affinity for nature shows, when we were deciding where to holiday this year, I pushed and pushed for South Africa until I got my way. Mostly I wanted to see the turtles - specifically The Loggerhead turtles. If I had gotten my full way, we would have gone for the full sixty day reproduction cycle of the loggerhead - from the laying of eggs on the beach to the hatching of the eggs to the watching of the baby turtles making their way back into the ocean.

We decided to spend the money and book a tour package with a well know Tour Operator. We had to add the turtle tour as an extra sort of side trip, but it was worth it. The turtles are endangered and as we are far from being experienced turtle trackers we didn’t want to mess with

Fun for all at uShaka Marine World

Submitted by Sue Burnie:
Fun for Everyone!! If you are traveling with kids, you will have to take a day and go to Ushaka Marine World. It’s a great stop no matter what age of traveling companion you are exploring with. We certainly had fun there.

It was one of the few parts of our South African trip that didn’t have a single family member mumbling about boredom (which isn’t surprising, none of the animal related activities we tried were boring!). Ushaka Marine World is both an aquarium and a theme park. It has Dolphin World complete with trained dolphin shows, it has a Sea World and I had fun going shopping in the Treasure World Retail village. When do I not love shopping? It’s probably best that you not ask my family that question. But, you know, my holiday shopping is done now so we’ll see .... / continued here

Top artists lined up for Splashy Fen 2007

A number of top artists have been confirmed for this year’s Splashy Fen Music Festival, which takes place over the Easter weekend (5 to 9 April) on a farm near Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal. Established in 1990, Splashy Fen is the longest-running music festival in the country and each year brings thousands of people together – from across South Africa and even from abroad – for what has become the ‘ultimate outdoor experience’.

Catch The Parlotones at Splashy Fen on Saturday, 7 April 2007.

This five-day event offers a multi-genre line-up of some of the country’s hottest established artists and promising newcomers to the music scene, as well as a variety of fun outdoor activities for the whole family. And with several new accommodation options and improved facilities being introduced, it’s clear that Splashy Fen 2007 is geared up to be the best yet!

The music: Chris Chameleon, The Parlotones, Tony Cox, Lark, Sitter, Jack Hammer, DNA Strings, Tidal Waves, Rory Eliot, Bed on Bricks, New Academics, Southern Gypsey Queen, SpoonFeedas and Craig & Vaughan's Bagpipe Emporium are just some of the artists that will take to the stage in the Grant Erskine Marquee, where the aim is to appeal to the broadest audience possible.

The Splashy Fen Marquee on the other hand will cater more for hard rock and alternative music fans, featuring acts like The Hellphones and Taxi Violence. Thursday and Friday nights will be hosted by Durban’s premier live music venue and nightclub, Burn, with a line-up that includes LA Cobra, The Kiff, Myepic and Habit To among others.

The popular SAI/SAMRO Free Stage will also be back again this year, providing a platform for as-yet-undiscovered artists, who will enjoy access to full backline equipment and professional sound engineers. The best of the SAI/SAMRO Free Stage will then go forward to a final where the winner will be offered a prime slot in 2008.

Activities for all: Other attractions range from river rafting, hiking, horseback trails and paintball to drumming circles and workshops, an extensive arts and crafts market, a wide assortment of food stalls and the ever-popular African Rainbow Village with its complementary therapists. Youngsters are also catered for, with fun activities to keep them amused during the day and a child-minding service available from 7-10 pm each evening.

New and improved facilities: In addition to an on-site ATM, hot showers and upgraded toilets, festival-goers will this year also be able to hire luxury motorhomes or book into a new ‘tent hotel’ on a bed and breakfast rate. For the first time, there will also be a special cordoned-off family campsite.

Tickets: Tickets are available at selected Game stores in KZN (R285), Computicket (R310) and at the festival gate (R350). Entrance for children under 12 is free. For the latest festival news, full programme details contact Pedro at 082 892 6176.

Take in the majestic Drakensberg at Tamakwa

Article by: Sally Scott, This article was originally published on page 13 of Daily News on September 01, 2006

Joshua and Gabby are two loving golden Labradors who are likely to give you an effusive greeting at the four-star Tamakwa Country Lodge nestled in Rosetta, above a scenic river walk with a striking view of the majestic Drakensberg. The lodge offers luxury bed and breakfast accommodation with comfortable cottage ambience, a lovely log fire and spectacular views from beautifully appointed verandas.

We stayed in the pristine two bedroom Lavender Cottage surrounded by blue pansies and sat, in the late afternoon on the verandah gazing down at the pink brush which hides the delightful riverside walk. Trout fishing can be arranged, but it was a little chilly to start messing around by the river. Our cottage was beautifully looked after and lacked for nothing.

Tamakwa also features a hidden treasure as far as fabulous food is concerned, in the shape of young chef Jonathan Crawford who creates a daily four course set menu at The Rose restaurant set within the main lodge and also open to those not staying at the lodge.

We dined on a creamy Tom Khai Gai Thai soup, smoked salmon potato cake and, for the main course, a chilli and chocolate beef fillet served on spring onion mash with stir fry veggies and Madagascar cream sauce. All as good as it sounds. In fact, it was difficult to make room for the decadent hazelnut dessert served with chocolate coulis and cream.

The Tamakwa experience is an all round delight and in easy driving distance of the Midlands Meander and Giant's Castle. Prices per night at Tamakwa range from R310 (self catering) to R370 bed and breakfast and R470 dinner, bed and breakfast.

First Black Rhino Calf born at Leopard Mountain Game Lodge

Article submitted by: Quinten Vivier; Leopard Mountain Game Lodge

Leopard Mountain Game Lodge, part of the Zululand Rhino Reserve, celebrates the birth of the first Black Rhino calf, only five months after the introduction of 21 animals. The calf was first sighted on 15 April. Being the second release sight of the WWF/Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, the rhino are monitored on a daily basis and we are constantly updated on their whereabouts. The mother of the calf is extremely protective, moving around in dense vegetation, trying to keep her calf out of sight. Hopefully soon we will have more calves roaming the reserve as two other cows are believed to be pregnant.

With winter just around the corner, availability of drinking water for the animals is decreasing slowly. Signs of elephant digging for water in the Msunduze River, just below the Lodge, can be viewed whilst stopping for refreshments on your game drive. We now see daily movement and frequent sightings of the elephant towards the River. Hopefully they will remain near the lodge until the end of winter - counting down the arrival of our first pride of lion.

We are running a name the rhino competition where a lucky reader will win R 4000 worth of accommodation if their suggestion for a name is chosen. To enter e-mail the name of the rhino to win@leopardmountain.co.za

If you would like to stay at this piece of heaven or for additional information: Please visit: Leopard Mountain Game Lodge

The New Restaurant at Tamakwa Country Lodge

TAMAKWA'S NEW RESTAURANT:
Featured in, The Quill April 2006. Article by Gaynor Lawson.

A full moon shines through the creepers that wind over the terrace as guests sip at their chilled sparkling wine. It's the opening of The Rose @ Tamakwa, a new restauarant at the 4-star Tamakwa Country Lodge outside Rosetta, and a small group of suppliers, friends and guests have been invited. Tamakwa owners, Wendy and Adrian Wilson, are ably assisted by asssistant manager Diane Luck, and soon diners are seated at immaculately set tables in an intimate pair of inter-leading dining rooms. The attention to detail is obvious. From exquisetly embroidered place settings (linen by local company Elegant Square Linen, embroidered by neighbour Heather Clarke) and quality cutlery to the flowers (by local florists Perfect Petals), and ice buckets carefully positioned at each table, everything is "just-so". The wine is from the experts at The Wine Cellar, just a few minutes away.

Wendy and Adrian decided to open the restauarant 'to add another dimension to Tamakwa', according to Adrian. Chef Jonathan Crawford is at the helm, with a cosmopolitan style that incorporates both South African and international influences and makes full use of the Midlands' fresh produce and superb meat. Jonathan places a very strong emphasis on presentation, and each dish is picture-perfect.

On the night guests were treated to a flavoursome tomato and basil soup, followed by deep-fried Camembert coated on coconut and served with caramalised pineapple, savoury spanspek and cranberry sauce - a true palette of flavours. Then medallions of beef served with fresh vegetables on a potato-cake bedding, and the piece de resistance; a sublime creation of chocolate mousse and wild berries. Other signature dishes include pan-fried kingklip with sweet pepper salsa and a Meditteranean bean salad; Thai spring rolls with garden greens and a duo of Thai sauces; and peppermint crisp delight, a dreamy mix of peppermint chocolate, caramel, cream and meringues.

The restauarant will be open for dinner seven nights a week, by appoinment, with a four course set menu that will change nightly. Special dietary requirements can be catered for if given advance notice. For more information and contact details visit Tamakwa Country Lodge.

Ballito - North Coast - KwaZulu Natal

Ballito is one of the Dolphin Coasts premiere Tourist Destinations and the Pearl of the KwaZulu Natal North Coast. Ballito is well known for its superb, safe beaches. For the small price of a licence, which can be purchased at the Natal Sharks Board, you can pick your own mussels off the rocks, collect oysters or bring in fresh crayfish from the Indian Ocean. Ballito's friendly, village atmosphere is a welcome haven from the fast pace of big city life, yet it offers all modern amenities and services to holiday-makers.

Bottle Nose Dolphins at Ballito

The beaches are the prime attraction and Ballito's main bathing beach, Willard Beach, provides safe swimming and qualified life-guards on duty seven days a week. Lifeguards and shark nets are also provided at Clarke Bay Beach to ensure that parents have a worry-free holiday. Further south is the Ballito Tidal Pool with two different sized pools, both well maintained and home to a wide variety of sea life.

Salmon Bay is a popular surf-spot and home to the Ballito inflatable boat clubhouse. Ballito also provides good opportunities for the angler, spear-fisherman and scuba diver. Thompson's Bay lies a little north of Ballito, and here you'll find the Olympic sized Charlie's Tidal Pool. There are also many secluded beaches, rocky coves and shallow paddling pools to provide endless hours of fun. A marine trail starting at the Hole-in- the-Wall natural rock formation, leads north to the legendary High Rock of King Shaka.

Blue Flag Beaches of the South Coast - KwaZulu Natal

Blue Flag certification started as an environmental and tourism campaign in Europe to assure visitors that certified beaches are clean, safe and environmentally sound. Blue Flag status is only awarded to those beaches that achieve excellence in water quality, environmental education and information, and adhere to international safety standards. High levels of cleanliness, the quality of facilities (toilets and showers) and professional lifeguard services are key criterion of Blue Flag beaches.

The South Coast currently has five Blue Flag beaches: Hibberdene, Lucien, Margate, Ramsgate and Marina Beach. Scottburgh and Uvongo beaches have been awarded pilot Blue Flag status for 2005. The Blue Flag assures you, the visitor, that the beaches are clean, safe and environmentally friendly. The award also helps to educate the community about the need and means of caring for our coastline; to promote one of South Africa’s natural treasures; and to help clean and protect our coastline.
